A Secret

For years he kept his secret warm,
and sheltered it from sun and storm.
He would not store it underground,
in case his love was never found.

Soon his friends had stopped to care,
And as they drifted off they said:
"If it is good, let it be shared,
If it is bad, let is be dead".

Then, when all his friends had gone,
he unfolded both his hands.
He who dreamt of fruit and diamonds,
Saw the seed and saw the sand.
