EASTER TERM 2005 EVENTS
JAIN QUIZ NIGHT (please note that this event has taken place)
From football to Tirthankars...from megabytes to kilojoules...from Harry Potter to politics....test your wits at a fun & interactive quiz night with prizes for the winning team! Please email Sareet Shah (ss588) to let us know you are coming - you can register in teams of upto four. If you haven't got a full team, we'll set you up with some other people.

MEDITATION SESSION (please note that this event has taken place)
Feeling stressed about your work, commitments, life…? Join us in atmospheric surroundings for an effective session of relaxation… The session will last no longer than an hour and will include some basic yoga techniques (therefore it is advisable to wear loose clothing) as well as a chance to partake in a unique meditation experience.

CUYJS GARDEN PARTY (please note that this event has taken place)
Celebrate the end of the year and unwind at our annual garden party...Lots of tasty food including Pau Bhaji, Bhel Puri and fruit Smoothies will be served! There will be music, games and lots more - this will be a real chance to forget the term's stress and just have fun, so get your tickets from any of the CUYJS committee now and start looking forward to the end of exams!

FRESHERS' SQUASH (please note that this event has taken place) Meet the committee members in a quieter setting, where you can learn about the society's events. This will be a chance for you to actually become a member.

SOCIETY DINNER (please note that this event has taken place) A great chance for freshers to mingle with current members and fellow freshers. Membership can also be signed up for at this Jain vegetarian dinner. To book your place at this event, please email Pooja Jain (pj236)
Time: 7.30pm To reach the restaurant, head for Downing College and walk a little past it. A group will also be walking down from St. John's College, leaving at 7.15pm from the Porter's Lodge.
TALK FROM SAMANIJIS (please note that this event has taken place) A rare opportunity to hear directly from two people who have taken the step to renounce the material world. The Samanijis will talk about what inspired their renunciation, and what they feel they have gained by stepping on the spiritual path. Questions will be very welcome. Please do tell us if you plan to come so we can arrange refreshements. (Pooja Jain, pj236)

DEBATE WITH JEWISH SOCIETY (please note that this event has taken place) 'With guidance and laws being provided by modern government, do we really need religions to do the same?' Esteemed speakers will be speaking on behalf of both religions in favour of this proposition, as two students speak against the need for religion. Dr. Harshadbhai Sanghrajka (with a PhD in Jainism) will be representing the Jain proposition. This unusual pairing of religions promises an exciting evening. As well as a chance to mingle with both our Jain membership and students of the Jewish faith, there will be an opportunity for questions from the floor so come prepared! Refreshments will also be served.

INTER-UNIVERSITY TRIP TO LEICESTER JAIN TEMPLE (please note that this event has taken place) This annual trip allows you to visit one of the most famous Jain landmarks of the country, as well as meet students from many universities - Oxford, Bristol, Aston and Warwick. A guided tour around this Leicester temple will be followed by a thought-provoking discussion led by Dr. Atulbhai Shah. A pure Jain meal will also then be served. We will be taking a private coach to and from the temple, and for those of you who remember last year, the travel games are one of the highlights!
Time: Meet at 10am to leave Cambridge promptly at 10.15am; arrive back at 6.15pm
JAIN GAMES (please note that this event has taken place) A cocktail of games with a Jain twist! Take a break from the final work assignments and end the term on a high note with both physical and mental games such as 'Jain Kabaddi' and 'Taboo Jaboo'! Come along to learn something about Jainism in some of the most fun (and perhaps wacky) ways! Rewards will be given to the winners of the games...

LENT TERM 2006 EVENTS
EVIL EXAMINATION (DISCUSSION) (please note that this event has taken place)
There's no doubt that money and religion are two valuable worldly influences. However, which is the more culpable source of wrongdoing? The great American poet Edgar Allen Poe once said "The pioneers of religion have been a greater cause of evil than all other classes of mankind". Agree? Disagree? Come and air your views in what will be an lively (yet informal) discussion!

DEMYSTIFYING RITUALS (Guest speakers) (please note that this event has taken place)
We once again welcome the Samanijis (Jain nuns) to Cambridge to provide us with answers to questions such as why Jains do Pratikramana or take off their shoes in a temple. The session will end with some devotional singing, led by Samaniji Punya Pragyaji.

'WHERE DID IT ALL BEGIN?' (Guest speaker) (please note that this event has taken place)
Dr. Mehool Sanghrajka will be coming to speak on "The evolution of Jainism" in a historic account of the beginnings of Jainism. Dr. Sanghrajka is the Institute of Jainology's Director of Education and having completed his PhD in Jainism this year, is an occasional lecturer at the University of London. Do join us for what promises to be a thought-provoking talk.

'GANDHI' (FILM) (please note that this event has taken place)
His Triumph Changed The World Forever We invite you to watch this epic tale of spectacular strength and achievement. The film is a biography of the lawyer who became the famed leader of the Indian revolts against the British through his philosophy of non-violent protest. Come watch this magnificent story that was directed by Richard Attenborough and won 9 Academy Awards. (Got 8.1 on IMdb, but deserved 10.2) Gandhi: Whenever I despair, I remember that the way of truth and love has always won. There may be tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they may seem invincible, but in the end, they always fail. Think of it: always.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING (please note that this event has taken place)
The current committee's time in office is coming to an end. Did you like the way they ran things? Have you got some new ideas which you are keen to share? Come along to our Annual General Meeting and reflect upon the past year. Raise any issues you have about the direction in which the society is progressing and consider standing on the committee yourself – a rewarding experience where you can be instrumental in providing imaginative ways to spread awareness of Jainism in Cambridge. This is your society so please do get involved!

Leave all your work related stress in the library and join us for an evening of tranquility. Come listen to some soothing music and partake in a relaxing meditation session. The session will last only an hour and will even include reciting relaxing and memory power mantras that may even help you with your revision.

PUNT N PICNIC (please note that this event has taken place)
Join us for an afternoon of punting and excellent food to celebrate the end of exams. What better way to kick off your may week than a relaxing punt down the river Cam followed by a picnic on Jesus green with superb cuisine prepared by our very own committee? This is surely an event not to be missed!

Jainism and Hinduism in Context by Ashik Shah (please note that this event has taken place)
Have you ever wondered about how Jainism and Hinduism complement or differ from each other? Here's your chance to learn about the two religions, and listen to an enlightening analysis of the philosophies, as well as to clear up your confusions! Ashik Shah, from the Young Jains organisation, will be coming to speak on this topic, and to help answer any questions you might have. Light refreshments will be provided.

Annual Leicester Trip (please note that this event has taken place)
This annual visit to the first Derasar in the UK and one of the most famous UK Jain landmarks will be held on Saturday 18th November. As well as a guided tour of the Derasar, visitors will learn more about the Jain rituals that take place there. There’s also the chance to meet other students from various universities across the country such as Aston, Bristol, Oxford and Warwick. Through discussions on topics like the "Jain Evangelism" and "One Life to Save Many" you’ll be given a great chance to express your beliefs and learn what other students have to say. This is all followed a full Jain meal.

LENT TERM 2007 EVENTS
Can Fundamental Principles in Jainism evolve for Contemporary Comfort? (Discussion) (please note that this event has taken place) Our guest speaker Dr Harshadbhai Sanghrajka will be speaking on following Jain principles in the modern age. Dr Sanghrajka is the Hon Secretary of the Institute of Jainology, with a PhD in Jainism. The topic of this talk is especially important to university students, so please do come along to hear what this extremely knowledgeable speaker has to say on the subject.
