Aged Tawny and Quinta Ports , November 7th
This tasting will focus on two styles of port – tawny ports and single quinta ports:
Tawny ports are aged in wooden barrels, exposing them to gradual oxidation and evaporation. As a result, they gradually mellow from the usual ruby red to a golden-brown colour. The exposure to wood imparts rich, nutty (rancio) flavours to the wine, which is usually blended to match the house style.
Single quinta port is vintage port produced from a particular vineyard (quinta is the Portuguese for vineyard), often from lesser ‘undeclared’ years. They thus offer vintage quality without necessarily attracting the same price premium. It should be noted however that some of the most renowned vintage ports are single quintas, since the character of the terroir is much more apparent, giving the wines their individuality and complexity.
The wines for this tasting are generously provided by The Fladgate Partnership, the owner of historic houses Taylor's, Fonseca, Croft and Delaforce. It is recognised for its prowess in the Vintage Port category and its achievement at auction. Headed by dynamic Managing Director, Adrian Bridge, the company has evolved into a serious specialist Port business which remains family owned. The quest for excellence continues in the vineyards, cellars and blending rooms backed by an on-going R&D programme and state of the art technology.
We are delighted to welcome Huyshe Bower, the Vice President of Taylor, Fladgate & Yeatman, as our speaker for the evening. With experience of the port industry spanning over 47 years, we are honoured to have such an authority on the subject leading us in this tasting.
The tasting will take place in the Dining Hall of Wesley House, starting at 9pm. The main entrance to Wesley House is opposite the end of Malcolm Street, on Jesus Lane.
