Cambridge: 92 all out
Oxford: 93-1
Oxford win by 9 wickets

Cambridge lost the toss and Oxford opted to field first on a damp but drying pitch. The Cambridge openers got off to a flying start, helped by some wayward Oxford bowling, and the score stood at 42 off just 8 overs when the first wicket fell. At 68/2, things were still looking positive, but the introduction of some slower medium pace bowlers by Oxford, who fully exploited the available swing, led to Cambridge collapsing to be bowled out for 92.

Cambridge’s bowlers knew that every ball would count if they were to bowl Oxford out and defend such a low total, and the nervousness showed. Despite some unplayable swing bowling by K. Roach, and the aggressive medium pace of S. Maidment, Oxford passed the total with the loss of just one wicket, G. Grant-Gale, caught close in by R. Hooper off the bowling of Maidment.

The 2007 BUSA season was a disappointing one for Cambridge, and the results do not reflect the ability of the side. A very close loss to Durham at the start of the season, followed by a disappointing performance against Leeds, left Cambridge with too much to do to qualify for the semi-finals. Our performances against the incredibly strong Loughborough side, however, were something to be proud of, although this is not reflected in the results. Moving on to the Knock-Out Cup, our match against Leeds Metropolitan was a must-win to avoid relegation, following the Nottingham walkover. With a depleted side our batting performance was poor, and although our bowling and fielding effort was amongst the best we had produced all season, we simply hadn't put enough runs on the board, and Leeds Met passed our total with a couple of overs to spare. This means that Cambridge will start next season in BUSA division one.

Although the results were poor, the 2007 season saw the team develop both individually and as a unit, and this progress made should stand us in good stead for next year. Seam bowlers Laura Gardiner, Kim Roach and Sooz Maidment put in consistently good performances, while slower bowling from Alys Donnelly and Dharshie Mahadeva proved tricky for the batters. Lizzie Peto was also an effective bowling change, and was often thrown the ball at difficult stages of the match. Consistent batting performances came from Susan Little and Jane Allison, with good knocks from Clare Ross, Alys Donnelly and Sooz Maidment at the top of the order. Middle-order batters Rachel Hooper and Amy Perkins made important contributions as well. On the field Sarah Walker was consistent-as-ever with the gloves, while Ellie Wright, Susan Little, Amy Perkins and Clare Ross should be commended for their fielding efforts.

Ely Indoor Tournament 2006 December 3rd, Ely

Cambridge won this local derby in a nailbiting final against Peterborough, after soundly demolishing the two NCI teams (including some donated university players!) in the initial rounds. The trophy is ugly, the medals have yet to materialise, but it was a good win regardless!

Varsity 2006 July 1st, Lord's Cricket Ground

Oxford: 218 all out
Cambridge: 201 all out
Cambridge lose by 17 runs

Cambridge won the toss and elected to field first. In hot sunny conditions, a wicket to opening bowler T. Glanville-Wallis followed by two to A. Prowse (3/23), and the key wicket of E. Wild (42) to E. Peto (3/34) gave us hope of containing Oxford to a fairly low total. A solid knock by Y Young (84), however, meant that Oxford kept scoring at a steady rate throughout their innings, and despite a late flurry of wickets, they went to lunch having been bowled out for a respectable 218.

After the break, Cambridge number three J. Allison (40) anchored the scoring, with sound support from A. Prowse (27). The scoring rate slowed a little throughout the middle of the innings, but L. Hancock and R. Hooper set a solid base from which Hancock eventually let loose, scoring a career-best 46, ably supported in the dying moments by A. Perkins, to bring Cambridge agonisingly close to what would have been a stunning victory. Unfortunately however it wasn’t to be, and the Cambridge innings was concluded with the wicket of Hancock in the 47th over.
