***Defensive line-up - Attack from 2 ***
The player positions shown above demonstrate where each player should aim to be when an attack comes from the front right. (What the opposition would call 'four' on their side of the net.) This flows naturaly from the base positions shown earlier and each player is just a few steps away from their defensive position.

The front court setter (S1) and the middle hitter (M1) act as blockers at the net, while the outside hitter (H1) drops back to cover a hard hit across court, and a soft dump into the middle of court.

The back court setter (S2) moves up behind the block and covers any dumps over the net or balls bouncing out off the block. The back middle player (M2) moves to cover a hit 'down the line', and the back outide hitter (H2) covers a hit across court, which the block may fail to cover. Here, the back court setter (S2) is in the ideal position to set the next ball.

***Defensive line-up - Attack from 3 ***
For an attack that comes through the middle, there are a number of defences a team can use, and one is shown above. Again, there is a two-man block, and the other players form an arc around the point of the attack.

***Defensive line-up - Attack from 4 ***
For an attack that comes through position '4' (what the opposition concider '2'), the player positions are as shown above. This is actualy the direct mirror image of for an attack from '2'.

The front middle player (M1) and the front hitter (H1) provide the block, while the front court setter (S1) drops back and covers a tight hit across the court.

The back court hitter (H2) covers anything dropping behind or off of the block, while the back court middle player (M2) covers a hit down the line and the back court setter (S2) covers the cross court hit through the block.

As you play this system you will start to notice how it all works together, and if everyone is in the right place, you should be able to efend most attacks. You will also see how everyone follows their own pattern of movement. The setters tend to be protected from hard hits, enabling them to set up the next attack, the middle players are very important to the defense as they're always blocking and spend most of the time running from left to right while everyone else tends to go back and forwards.
