Playing out their last fixture in the Div1 South league, UCCM faced tough opponents Newmarket for a rearranged away match. Perhaps the jetlag of travelling northeast to the outer reaches of Cambridge was to blame - they lost 3-0. Waiting for final matches to decide the league placing, UCCM finish with seven wins and five losses.

Cambridge Men competed at the BUSA Finals over the weekend, ranked as one of the top eight teams in the country. Pooled with eventual finalists Sheffield Hallam and Nottingham, the Blues defeated Kent University to take 3rd spot, losing a play-off positional game for 5th against Sheffield the following day. In a new format triangular fixture at the Leys School last sunday, UCCM were left wondering if they will progress to the next stage of the CVA Spring Cup as a "best second" placed team. Beating Spalding easily, the UCCM team floundered against a weak Newmarket team in a match that coach Garaud described as "incroyable".

UCCM was finally rewarded with success after last week's defeat, beating CVC2 in 3 clear sets. Starting 6 were veterans from last year Paulo Coelho and Daniel Berhardt (outside) and Martin Weber (brilliantly adapting to his new position as reverse hitter). This year's new captain Jim McElwaine made a noticed debut on court, together with Pavel Zutko as Middles, with Marcello Silva setting. The first BUSA matches of the 2003-4 season got underway on Wednesday. The Womens Blues travelled to Warwick to play this newly promoted team and dropped a set in a narrowly contested match (see full report). The Mens Blues faced Oxford Brookes at home and slipped to an uncharacteristic defeat in five sets.

University volleyball trials for 2003-4 Blues and second teams will take place on SATURDAY THE 11th OCTOBER at KELSEY KERRIDGE. If you have some playing experience you will want to try for a place in one of these teams (Blues men and women play BUSA and EVA Cup competitions and the Varsity matches, the mens and womens second teams (UCCM and UCCW) play in regional leagues). Please sign up at the CUVC stall at Societies Fair or attend the trials session below (if you are an experienced player and cannot attend these trials please contact the relevant team coach);
WOMEN'S TRIALS - 5pm to 7pm
MEN'S TRIALS - 7pm to 9pm
BEGINNERS - If you want to try volleyball and have little or no previous experience, you are welcome to come along to the first beginners session. This will take place in Kelsey Kerridge at 4pm on Saturday 18th October (and the same time each following Saturday).
