CUVC Indoor Cuppers 2002
Division 1 - Saturday 16th February 2002, 2-6pm
CUVC's first ever indoor cuppers competition kicked off with ten teams
vying for the Division 1 title. With both Blues squads away in Leeds for
the Student Cup Finals, the competition promised to be much closer than
usual.
After the usual problems of late arrivals and trouble errecting the
net, the pool phase of the competition got underway. In pool 1 the
combined team of Darwin and Pembroke plus, it would seem, as many UCC1
players as they could lay their hands on, ran away and hid with an
impressive 120 points scored. The competition for second place was
altogether closer, with Catz eventually making it through to the
semi-finals. There was no surprise in pool 2 as John's 1 (last year's
League and Cup double winners) won in comfortable fashion, with Robinson 1
also making it through despite very close games against Anglia and
John's.
On to the semi-finals where UCC1 would play Robinson and John's faced
Catz. Robinson pulled out a lead of 4-5 points early on but the power of
the combined team was too much as they clawed their way back to win in the
very last minute. John's continued their unerring march to the final with
a devastating win over Catz, despite a run of 5 consecutive aces my Moritz
Riede.
As with all the pool games, the final was played under a time limit due
to the constraints of the hall booking. In a nip and tuck affair it was
John's who had the luck of the draw when it literally came down to
"next point wins" as they took the title 21-20.
Division 2 - Saturday 23rd February 2002, 2-6pm
Despite the driving wind and intermittent blizzard conditions, seven
college teams managed to reach Kelsey Kerridge for what turned out to be a
fun-packed and memorable occasion. With some colleges pulling out at the
last moment, the game times were extended, allowing everyone to get more
court time.
The pool stage was an intense affair, with the smaller of the two
pools (pool 2) proving the tougher, containing both eventual finalists.
Magdalene racked up an impressive 101 points in pool one, a number whose
size was only matched by their players height. Churchill also did the
inconceivable by getting both their second and third team through to the
semi-finals. Most colleges could only manage one team. Respect should
also go to the Robinson Mavericks, who provided much entertainment to the
event with their patented technique of throwing themselves around the
court, and even kicking the ball into open space when necessary. Harlem
Globetrotters anyone?
On to the semi-finals, and Johns II took on Churchill III, while
Churchill II took on Magdalene. They were both rather close and intense
games, but eventually the more skilful teams won through and earned their
places in the final. Johns II would have been hoping to emulate the
success of Johns I the previous week, and the match was close right up to
the midway point, but an impressive display of team captaining (shouting
as loudly as possible) saw Churchill pull ahead to take the title 37
points to 28.
The third-forth play-off saw one of the closest matches of the day,
with Magdalene taking on Churchill III. The lead constantly switched back
and forth, along with the luck and skill, but Magdalene just proved too
strong for Churchill III and took the match 38-36. The fifth-sixth
play-off went to Downing in an impressive display of what a consistent
serve can do, as they took the match 50 points to 28.
