***About the Sport of Volleyball ***

Most people in the UK know volleyball through the "family reunion" form of the game. In this, twelve players stand stock still on each side of a net and get to bat the ball up in the air every couple of minutes, when it drops near them. Played properly, however, volleyball is an outstanding sport for overall fitness, requires unrivaled teamwork and, of course, is lots of fun. [more...]

Over the past few years the rules of volleyball have changed significantly. For example, players may now use any part of the body to contact the ball, serves may contact the net, and points are now scored on every rally played. [more...]

As with any sport, volleyball has its own set of words and phrases to describe not only the game itself, but also players on the court (usually the opponents!). Is it good to be called a "Redwood"? Find out here in our Volleyball Glossary.

***Varsity and Student Cup ***

All four Cambridge University Volleyball Teams will head towards Oxford on Sunday, the 26th February for the long awaited annual Varsity encounter. However, prior to the ever exciting Oxford challenge, the two Blues teams will have to stand up to the best 16 teams in the UK at the Volleyball England Student Cup Finals. After having won their respective pools comfortably at the Qualifiers back in November, both Blues teams are looking forward to the Finals weekend, to take place in Norwich mid February. The Men are determined to fight their way back into the top three in the competition, after gradually having dropped positions since 2007/2008. The Women, whose Student Cup record has been improving over the past two years, are also highly motivated this year, and hope to set a team record by reaching the Semi-Final stage.
