Present:

Richard White
Huw Vater
Theo Koukis
Paula Booth
Duncan Robertson
Friederika von Tiesenhausen
Claire le Pichon
Alex Ellis (a bit late)

Apologies

Alex Jupp (Secretary)
David Malinge

  • Minutes of the 1998 AGM were presented and approved

Men's Co-ordinator's Report

  • Most Successful Year Ever

  • Thanks to Maik for coaching

  • Won Varsity Match 3-0 (first win in 8 years)

  • Not made it to the finals of the EVA Student Cup

  • Came 3rd overall in BUSA

  • Attendance at trainings was good, despite unsociable training times

  • All players improved, and should be a good basis for next year's team

  • Need new coach for next year

Treasurer's Report

  • No treasurer this year, so done by Adam Polka (last year's) and Dan Escott

  • Last year lost lots of money, not what was predicted at last year's AGM

  • Sports Syndicate "concerned about the overspend <in 1997-8> and recommended that the Club increases its student contribution to membership or travel"

  • This year showed a profit of £621.20, and we are expecting BUSA travel grant and have T-shirts in stock

  • Next year should make similar profit to allow purchase of new balls, and to stop the need for loans from the Committee

Fund Raising

  • Dan had received an email from Adidas asking us to test footwear for them. Everyone seemed enthusiastic towards this idea, and Richard will reply poining out our recent success and ask for kit sponsorship too. Richard also agreed to write off to other local companies asking for sponsorship. Duncan suggested we compile a list of old- boys. This is already underway on the website.
< At this point Alex Ellis arrived, commenting that she'd forgotten about the meeting >

Women's Captain's Report

  • Not won that many matches this year and the team had been quite disorganised

  • Lost Varsity match 3-1 but the performance had been much better than in recent years

  • Qualified for the EVA Finals, but not BUSA

  • Have organised a new coach, known simply as "Harold", as well as another local player willing to help out with training sessions

  • Alex commented that it had been a fun year, and promised that they will start winning next year

Publicity

  • Web site is "nice"
  • Grads to put up posters in Aug/Sept rather than leaving it until October as usual
  • Advert in Freshers' Varsity
  • Stand is already booked for Freshers' Fair, and entry submitted for the CUSU Handbook
  • Need more reports in Varsity, and pictures
  • Try and attract more players from the collegiate teams
  • Alex agreed to take care of publicity and posters

Election of Officers

All officers stood unopposed, and were voted in unanimously

  • Men's Co-ordinator - Richard White
  • Women's Co-ordinator - Frederike von Tiesenhausen
  • Secretary - Theo Koukis
  • Treasurer - Duncan Robertson agreed to be treasurer, but would require the help of the other Committee members
  • Website Co-ordinator - Huw Vater

AOB

  • Claire pointed out that we should try to use the CUSU minibuses if possible
We should book early and then cancel if the dates change

  • Duncan said that it is a shame that then 1st and 2nd teams didn't mix more socially
Suggestions included a BBQ, Garden Party and informal outdoor tournaments

  • Dan announced that we will be getting a new Club email address of the form volleyball@cusu.cam.ac.uk

  • Richard will contact Cambridge VC to try to arrange a coach for the men's team next year

  • Secretary to be responsible for organising the 2nd team
Coaching should be done on a rota system, organised by the men's and women's co-ordinators
Possibility of a fine system to encourage all first team members to participate
