Men's Captain's Report
- Lost Varsity Match
- Qualified for EVA Student Cup Finals in Leeds
- Reached BUSA last 16
- Thanks to Maik for coaching
- The lack of attendance at trainings highlighted the lack
of commitment of the first team. A midweek session would
be required for next year, along with more match practice
to develop a "killer instinct" to finish off
opponents
Women's Captain's Report
- Claudia expressed her apologies for her absence during
the Lent Term, and thanked the team for their help
- Lost Varsity Match
- Qualified for EVA Student Cup Finals in Leeds
- Reached BUSA last 16
- Thanks to Lesley for coaching
- Very good team spirit
- More training required
- Claudia highlighted the mess in the first set of the
Varsity match, putting it down to Lesley's mistake, but
did comment that "nobody's perfect"
Secretary's Report
- Coaching for beginners and intermediates had been
organised by Dan and Andy all the time with limited input
from the Men's and Women's Captains. Maik suggested the
possibility of a rota and fine system for the first teams
- to be looked into by the new Committee
- There had been a significant improvement in the level of
the beginners throughout the year
- In order to be competitive in the Local League, we need a
regular group of intermediates
- Thanks to Christoph for organising the second team's
Varsity Match (which we won)
- There had been little organised social activity in the
Lent Term
- Highlighted need for Committee members to fulfil their
roles
- The Committee need to meet more regularly
- Thanks to Maik for coaching, Klaus for driving and all
the committee members
Treasurer's Report
- Profit predicted by last year's treasurer has not
happened due to the lack of a BUSA travel grant
- This year to date: Income £4350 (inc. £1900 University
Grant)
Expenditure £3900
- Adam commented that we had £180 tied up in T-shirts and
that we are expecting £250 from Summer League.
Furthermore, we still had to pay Ley's school and so we
should (hopefully) just about break even for the year
- Dan commented that both captains wanted more training
time, yet we had only just had enough money to finance
this year's bookings. There is therefore a need to ensure
the club has more income in the future. Suggestions
considered were sponsorship (particularly of, say cuppers
or the Summer League) and raising membership fees
(especially for the first teams). More discussion is
required on these topics by the new committee. Dave
Gardiner suggested that we start an alumni record which
could help finances in a few years time.
Publicity
- Web site is getting registered (free of charge)
- Need to appear regularly in Varsity and also the local
newspapers. This will also improve the possibility of
sponsorship
Election of Officers for 1998-9
