BUCS Regionals 2011

The fact that trampolining normally happens in the evening is just one of the many reasons to be a trampolinist rather than a boatie. Things looked a bit different though for the two lone competitors who were to embark on a train to Nottingham for BUCS Regionals at 6.30 (!) on a Saturday (!) morning. That's a pretty early start - too early for Susie in fact, who was woken up by Christine's phone call after the spectacular failure of her alarm clock. Thankfully the organisers allowed us to swap flights so she was fine arriving an hour later and everything could go ahead as usual.

Christine was first to compete. After having driven her coaches mad in training with finding ever more flaws in her routines, and a catastrophic warm-up (well, catastrophic according to her definition), the perfectionism seemed to pay off in the competition. Both routines were pretty neat and that was rewarded with 7.7-ish form marks for the set and 7.5 for the vol.

Susie followed in the second flight. Despite being quite nervous in her first ever serious competition, she made a remarkably good job of it, getting safely through both routines, including the dreaded front somersault.

Now what to do when you're done with a competition by lunchtime, the most exciting thing to watch are BUCS 4 routines and awards are not scheduled before 17.30? Susie did what Cambridge 3rd years do: find a library and work. The postgrad was by far less diligent and had a good look around Nottingham's caves and castle - and just even made it to the award ceremony, which started 90 minutes early - too early for Susie: Christine's phone call came too late once again.

So good luck for Christine who realised just in time that she had won and was awarded a piece of paper and a journey to Sheffield. Looking forward to Nationals now! (But I still can't do backdrops!)
