BUCS Nationals 2009

22 March 2009

The best Cambridge team for several years finished 5th overall at BUCS finals in Bristol, which is a fantastic effort considering the strength of some of the unis, notably UWIC and Bath, who had guys doing double figure DD routines.

Asha Bayliss, Kate Bramall and Nuala Tumelty all earned full blues. Special congratulations should go to Nuala who was competing in her last BUCS finals and despite suffering from ever worsening injuries throughout the term performed the 2nd best compulsory routine in her level to finally earn that full blue she so richly deserves.

Sarah Pearcey finished 26th in women's level 2, but showed plenty of reasons to suggest that she will be very competitive next year if she continues to train strongly.

Notably, the top 2 in the women's level 1 competition were the top 2 in the varsity match, underlining the standard of the sport at the varsity level.

Captain Brioney Gee, who earned a half blue at regionals, suffered at the hands of the panel 2 judges and trampolines, finishing 12th. Rob McNeil fell after his 2nd skill in his compulsory routine, although came back to complete the same routine in his voluntary. Gareth Tear bounced much better than at regionals, which pleased his coach, but he was judged 1.7 lower by the stricter finals judges.
