Service activites
CUSAGC has good connections to both the Guiding and Scouting Communities in the Cambridgeshire Area.
Some of our members take the opportunity to help with local units. The CUSAGC Cheese and Wine Evening, held at the start of the academic year provides the best opportunity for Guiders/Scouters to meet prospective leaders. There will be representatives from all sections and convenient to all Cambridge Colleges. Students do not even have to join CUSAGC to take advantage of this. Furthermore the SAGLO (Scout and Guide Liaison Officer) is able to help members find units throughout the year.
In the Lent term CUSAGC runs a craft and activity morning for Rainbows and Brownies followed by an afternoon session for Cubs and Brownies. As well as being a fun day with lots of crafts and games it enables Cubs and Brownies to interact with others from outside their units. It is also a way for CUSAGCers (whether usually involved with a unit or not) to contribute their varied skills. The day ends with a BBQ, which utilises the skills of the more pyromaniac CUSAGCers.
The biggest, and most rewarding event of the year is FORWARD. This is a 10mile incident hike for Scouts and Guides which in 2005 was attended by a record number 29 teams and 135 participants. CUSAGCers man about five activity checkpoints that test the participants on everything from tent pitching to puzzles to 1st Aid.
Following comments from past Forward participants, CUSAGC is introducing a new event in Michaelmas 2005, called Marathon Challenge, which is an extended day/night incident hike, open to Explorer Scouts and Guide Senior Section. See our Marathon Challenge pages for more details.
