Here are then the answers to the 3
most Frequently Asked
Questions regarding SAFE schemes:
HOW ARE FUNDS ACTUALLY RAISED?
In two manners: opt-in and opt-out. Under an opt-in scheme forms
are distributed to all students at the end of each term and those
who wish to contribute complete and return the form. In contrast,
in an opt-out system, a contribution
to SAFE is automatically added to students' college bills. Students
can of course choose not to contribute, by completing a special
form again distributed with the college bill. The idea behind opt-out
fundraising schemes is to simply realise that many students willing
to contribute will not in practice go to the extent of completing
and sending a form. Besides, the scheme, once installed, is self-sustained
and requires little administrative work from prospective SAFE committees,
allowing them to concentrate on raising awareness and support and
deciding where to allocate the funds raised.
HOW IS IT DECIDED
WHERE TO ALLOCATE THE FUNDS RAISED?
The college reps (often
elected in JCR elections) receive funding proposals from the charities.
These are then examined and discussed within the committee. The
money is then distributed accordingly. Moreover, CUSAFE ensures
that the experience of each committee with various charities and
NGO's is registered and archived. It therefore becomes year by year
possible to make increasingly informed decisions about the prospects
of success and importance of each proposal. Please visit our Funding
Guidelines page to find out more about this.
