What is Southern/Sub-Saharan Africa?

The map below shows the countries which are generally agreed to constitute Sub-Saharan Africa. As explained in The growth of SAFE, SAFE began by only funding projects in South Africa but has considerably expanded its scope since then. We hope this map is useful but stress that it is merely a guide. SAFE schemes have funded projects outside this area before and it is up to reps to decide the respective merits of each proposal they receive.

N.B. To clarify some confusion: in this website, we use the phrases 'Southern Africa' and 'sub-Saharan Africa' to mean the same thing (the area shown on the map). In other contexts Southern Africa refers to a much smaller region, but we think Sub-Saharan African Fund for Education would be a little less catchy as a name!
