Magdalene College Southern African Fund for Education

The Magdalene College Southern African Fund for Education has been set up in co-ordination with CUSAFE, a scheme established by Cambridge students to provide financial support to Non- Governmental organisations and charities working in Southern Africa. CUSAFE operates in the belief that education is vital in breaking the cycle of poverty in the countries of Southern Africa. Magdalene SAFE is based on an 'opt-in' plan whereby students contribute a small sum of money that is added to their college bill each term. The money raised in this way goes to charities working to improve the state of education in Southern Africa such as CAMFED, Link Community development and the Cannon Collins Trust.

Aims and Objectives

The role of the Magdalene College SAFE is defined as follows:

  • To raise awareness of the social importance of, and issues surrounding, the role of education in Southern Africa.
  • To collect money for various charities, through the 'opt-in' scheme and fundraising events, and with the co-operation of Magdalene College students and bursary.
  • To receive proposals from those charities concerned with education in Southern Africa and to decide from these proposals exactly how the money raised will be distributed. The decision will be made by a majority vote and there is a maximum of three charities that may benefit from SAFE money each year.
  • To expand support for SAFE within the college student body and fellowship.
  • To ensure the continuity of the SAFE scheme at Magdalene College.

The Committee

The Magdalene College SAFE committee is composed of 6 main roles and an unlimited number of general members. The main roles are:

President
Vice-President

It is also possible for more than one committee member to take equal responsibility for certain posts, such as those of secretary or Events Officer. If the main committee roles are not filled then the rest of the committee may take on those roles in a joint capacity. All the money donated to SAFE will be kept in a bank account held in the name of Magdalene SAFE. Access to the account is limited to the bursar and two members of the SAFE committee.
