To establish an opt-out system on your college bill (this way,
as would be expected, increases the amount of money collected for
SAFE) you will need the authority of...:
- College administration, i.e. bursar
- Student body i.e. proposal in OGM followed by student
vote
...usually in this order.
This step-by-step guide may help:
- Find some like minded friends (this makes things a lot easier).
- Chat to your Bursar and explain what you are trying to do, explaining
that the scheme already operates in most colleges, and why it
is still necessary to support Southern Africa.
- The SAFE schemes are administered through the College Office.
If you provide them with a list of contributors they will be put
the money on the College Bill and then give you a cheque.
- Set up a bank account (preferably with an ethically friendly
bank).
OK, that's the mechanics of the operation. What you now need to
do is get people to contribute.
If you can get an opt-out constitution
through both College authorities and your JCR you would be very
lucky (i.e., people would automatically contribute unless they opted
out, which you must give them the chance to do each year). You would
also get a lot of money, but might suffer problems due to a lack
of legitimacy and consequently get a bit of hassle.
If not, people are going to have to opt-in
(which unfortunately means more work for the SAFE reps in collecting
contributions). Here is a few ideas how to get people to opt-in
to their SAFE scheme:
- A squash, where you and some friends sit behind the booze explaining
what you are about.
- Obviously pigeon hole people and advertise first: approximate
cost is £40, which is very small compared to the amount
you will make. Pigeon hole everyone explaining why they should
fund education in Southern Africa and leaving a space for them
to fill in their names if they want to contribute. Have a box
in the pigeon hole room where they can put their slips. Make it
as easy as possible for people to contribute.
- Don't forget Fellows: they can even be asked to contribute more.
- Events of all sorts. Use your imagination to prepare an event
that will attract a crowd and then choose a way to fundraise:
for instance, you can have a box for donations at the entrance
or you can charge an entrance fee (and then have cheap or even
free drinks).
