Members of the committee were determined to hold a fundraising
event in 2001 as well as collecting money from college bills,
as it was felt that this was important in order to raise awareness.
As such a wine tasting evening was held towards the end of Lent
term 2001. Wine experts from Oddbins came to college to hold a
tasting session on a number of different South African Wines.
A discount voucher for Oddbins and food was also included in the
ticket price. Information on the charities that SAFE has donated
money to in the past was displayed in the room. Unfortunately
the event was held on the same night as the college play, and
so there was not great attendance. However, those that did come
seemed to enjoy themselves. Hopefully we will repeat this event
in 2002, this time with better timing and more publicity.
Towards the end of Michaelmas term 2001 a leaflet was produced
which contained a short description of each of the charities that
the money donated in 2001 had been given to. The leaflet also
contained an opt out form. A copy was put in each undergraduate's
pigeonhole in the last week of Michaelmas term. The distribution
of the leaflets was advertised via the JCR communications officers,
to ensure that everybody knew what SAFE was, and had the opportunity
to opt out if they wanted to.
Members of the committee also attended a CUSAFE formal hall towards
the end of the Michaelmas term, which helped to forge links with
SAFE reps from other colleges
