THE EDUTAINER APPEAL

- - > Here is a classroom BEFORE the edutainer. Only 2% of children under three are enrolled in full-day pre-school programs, and about 10% of children under six (in Belgium, France, Denmark and Italy, by comparison, the figure is about 80%). Much of the pre-schooling, which does occur, takes place in cramped, dilapidated and unhygienic conditions, with problems ranging from lead paint contamination to inadequate lighting.

-What are edutainers?
Edutainers are an imaginative cost-effective response to the lack of educating facilities in South Africa for children aged approximately 2 to 8 years old. Edutainers are fully equipped, early-learning classrooms. They are converted from twelve-meter (forty foot) full size, high quality containers. The internal area is 30 square meters, taking up to thirty children. The containers are brightly decorated and plentifully stocked with carefully selected books, teaching aids, educational toys and top quality furniture.

-How are the Edutainers distributed?
The project methods are summarised as follows: the sponsor contacts the Bright Kid Foundation and agrees on the details of the sponsoring; the Bright Kid Foundation constructs or supervises the construction of the Edutainer; the Foundation along with the donor decide on which NGO will receive the Edutainer; the Edutainer gets delivered by the Bright Kid Foundation and installed on a concrete basis. During the installation there is usually involvement of the entire community followed by some opening celebration which serves to familiarise the children and parents with the Edutainer. Evidently, the Edutainer is mobile, so it can move from place to place if needs vary as time goes by.
