25.02.06 - In our first varsity match a team of Tom Sutherland (skip), Louis, Graeme and Saffron managed to find their way through a closed M11 to take on an Imperial side skipped by their president David Willey. After a couple of ends getting used to the ice conditions on the sheet Imperiasl had been playing on for 2 hours, the Cambridge team eventually got itself on top with a good draw weight to win 8-2.
14.02.06 - News from the English Championships
Cambridge University is now represented on both the English Mens and Womens Curling teams following success at this year's English Championships. The tournament, which determines the team that will represent England at the forthcoming European Championships in December, was held for the first time at Fenton's Rink in Kent, England's only purpose built curling rink, which provided the best possible ice conditions for all involved. The men's team skipped by Michael Opel (Girton) together with Robinson alumnus Jamie Malton, Andrew Woolston, Kenneth Malton and Tom Sutherland (Emmaunel) got off to a flying start in their double round-robin with two convincing wins over Keith Wilson and defending champion Bruce Bowyer, before pulling off a closer victory against Paul Atherton to set up a crucial second encounter with Keith Wilson. In a game that swung backwards and forwards, Michael was left with a tough tap-back with his last stone in the final end with the scores level. After a well-executed shot and a few nervous minutes, the umpire could not determine the shot stone and so sent the game into an extra end in which the team held its nerve to all but guarantee the title.
Claire Grimwood (Peterhouse) along with Joan Reed (skip), Lorna Rettig and Kirsty Balfour successfully defended their women's title won last year in a best of five games encounter with a much improved Fiona Hawker team. After struggling to read the ice correctly in the first game, the champions then won three tight games to win with a game to spare.
30.10.05 - The Cambridge University team of Michael Opel (skip), James Malton, Claire Grimwood and Tom Sutherland finished tied 3rd in the Fenton's Cup having lost in the semi-finals to the eventual winners, the Home Team. Saturday had seen the team make good progress, beating Markinch Curling Club to top their group, and then winning their quarter final 7-5. However an aggresively played first end early Sunday morning left Michael with a tricky draw against 4 stones which drifted through the house, after which the team didn't really get going. Nevertheless it was a good result for the club, and we will look to win the cup back next year.
28.10.05 - The first day of the anniversary bonspiel at Fenton's rink was a success for the club, with winning two tight games 9-2 and 4-3 to virtually ensure themselves of a place in the knock-out stages. The team is hoping for similar success tomorrow and on Sunday.
24.10.05 - Claire represented England at the European Mixed Curling Championships in Andorra last weekend. The team finished joint first in its group, but unfortunately lost out in the tie-breaker against Hungary to a steal in the extra end. Congratulations to Claire, who will also be competing in the European Women's Championship in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in December, and watch out for an interview in TCS this week...
