Report by Bridget Hipwell
On the 11th of December 2013, the CUET 2nd’s headed down to Writtle College for the second BUCS match of the season. Unfortunately since the match fell outside term time, Ollie and Alice Strang Steel weren’t able to compete however fortunately the team’s two fantastic reserves (Lottie Buttar and Mary Tivey) were able to step into the team.
The competition started with a good horse draw for Cambridge, with the first three riders Ali Simon, Lottie and Mary riding beautiful tests scoring them 0 penalty points. Unfortunately Bridget Hipwell had a harder ride, riding last on a very tired 16.2” who really wasn’t playing game: this scored her 14 penalty points.
With a fantastically low team score of just 14 penalty points after the dressage phase of the competition, Cambridge were strong leaders going into the jumping phase. Bridget was up first looking to improve on her dressage score, she drew a tricky 15.2” which played to her strengths as she managed to ride a neat clear round. This round was followed by a controlled clear from Mary, Ali and Lottie completed the jumping phase with nice rounds, each just knocking one pole down. The results of the jumping phase were 0 penalties for Bridget, Mary and Ali and just 9 penalties for Lottie. This gave Cambridge a team jumping score of 9 penalty points.
With massive wins in both the dressage and the jumping, Cambridge won the team competition finishing on 23 penalties with 2nd place going to Writtle who finished on 116 points. Individually both Ali and Mary finished on 0 penalties having won both the dressage and jumping on their horse and so being placed an individual 1st and 2nd place respectively. Lottie was close behind in 3rd place and Bridget came 6th. Overall a fantastic result for the Cambridge 2nds, well done!
