Nicola Heckeburg, who was 2012-2013 team and was an individual regional qualifier, wrote the following overview of the 2012-13 BUCS season:

“The 2012-13 BUCS season was a rather difficult one for Cambridge University Riding Club as team members were changed for each competition and no regular team training was organised. However, despite having originally been chosen as the first reserve for the first team, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to compete in all four competitions this year. Representing Cambridge and competing against others meant a lot to me and I had a great time throughout.

The first competition was our home contest which resulted in a 2ndplace for the team and 3rd and 4th places individually. In the next competition at Easton College our team was placed 3rd overall with one individual 2nd place. Only 2 days later we competed at the University of Essex and came out more successfully with a 2nd place for the team and 2nd and 6th places individually. The last competition at Writtle College was the most challenging, as the team was formed only 12 hours before the actual competition! Results were mixed with a 3rd place for the team and a 1st place individually.

The team didn’t qualify for Regionals, but with my accumulated 1st and 3rd individual placings over the season I got invited to compete at Regional selections at Warwick College in April. This was a fantastic day with lovely horses to ride but the field was, as expected, very strong and I unfortunately missed out on Nationals qualification.

This has been, most likely, my last year of student riding, but I hope to continue doing so with other university clubs in the future, as they provide a brilliant opportunity to ride and compete, even if you don’t have your own horse. I’m curious to see what the team will achieve next season (2013-14) with regular training sessions and a second team entered into BUCS.”
