The following report was written by Rosie Brandreth describing the novice dressage competition held at Springhill Stables on 14th March 2014.
The end of Lent term saw the eagerly anticipated novice dressage competition. Novice and beginner riders took part in a dressage test competing for a trophy and rosettes. We arrived to discover which horse we had been allocated (Harry, Marley, Dolly or Bailey) and started warming up – some of us who were competing nearer the end were a little too keen and got a bit tired by the time it was our turn! We were very lucky with the weather, sitting on the fence in the sunshine to watch the other riders and to call the test (we all decided memorising the test was far too difficult so took it in turns to call the next steps out to the riders).
Fiona judged the tests and handed back our score sheets for some tense mental maths as we tried to work out who had won! Kirsty Jones took 1st place on Marley, followed by Tamsin Spelman in 2nd, Rosie Brandreth in 3rd, Caitlin Mayes in 4th, Leanne Philpot in 5th and Ellie Crouch in 6th. Beginners were also able to compete in a test without canter; this class was won by Suzy Eames on Harry. Everyone rode really well and the scores were very close (even after correcting some of our dodgy adding up!!). We all got rosettes, 1st to 6th and some ‘special’ ones too! Thank you to Fiona and Hettie Winsor for organising the day and to Tamsin Spelman for the lovely lunch.
