If
you've already decided you want to give polo a try:
First things first, if you're keen and fancy talking to a
real person from the committee, come meet us at the Fresher's
Fair at Kelsey Kerridge. You can also get signed up to the
club mailing list using the form on the left of this page,
and keep up to date with information about forthcoming events,
including our Club Squash (“Have-a-go” day for
those new to Cambridge slang) especially for new members.
There will be a chance to watch some polo, meet the committee,
players and ponies and to have a go yourself, along with nibbles
and drinks – all entirely FREE.
Finally,
even if you happen to miss all that, you can still come along
to 'sign up' (see below) in the first few weeks and book in
for a beginners lesson. (We offer one trial lesson before
you decide to join the club, so you can find out whether Polo
is your thing.)
If
you're still considering whether to give it a go: (Questions
and Answers)
Q:
Do I need to have previous experience of Polo to join?
A: You don't need to have played at all to start lessons with
us, you just need to be a competent rider. If you have previous
experience of Polo, you’ll find yourself well placed
amongst our experienced players. If you want to know more
about how the game works, check out Polo
- A Guide
Q: How good does my riding need to be?
A: You need to be confident in all paces, particularly canter.
If you are unsure whether your riding would be good enough
let us know and one of our experienced players can take a
look and help you to decide. If you are complete beginner
to riding have a look at Cambridge University Riding Club.
Q:
How often are lessons / chukkas held?
A: We aim to arrange lessons and chukkas most days of the
week, at times ranging from mid-afternoon to evening, so you’ll
be able to play Polo in between your lectures, or instead
if you choose!.
Q:
Are there lessons all year round?
A: We play in an all weather arena in the Winter and on grass
during the Summer term.
Q:
What equipment do I need?
A: Very little! You will need shoes or boots with a heel that
are safe to ride in. The club has riding hats that you can
borrow. Other than that, comfy clothes that allow freedom
of movement are fine.
Q:
Polo is really expensive, isn’t it?
A: Not here ! Lessons cost £16 each for approximately
one and half hours tuition and Membership costs £50
per Term. Although this might seem like a lot of money, this
really is some of the cheapest Polo around. Many of the large
and famous clubs charge more than your Student Loan in Membership
alone…
Q:
I’m keen ! How do I start?
See the top of this page!
Q: Where do we play?
A: Our ponies live at Haggis Farm and we use the Polo Grounds
and Arena there. We meet outside the Granta pub and drive
or cycle to Haggis together. Directions to Haggis and Granta
are given in the lessons section.
Q: What horses do we ride?
A: The club owns six polo ponies.
Q: A wooden horse?
A: There is a wooden horse at Trumpington (see directions)
which we are allowed to use for free whenever we like. Being
able to practice your swing without worrying about what the
horse is doing is very useful! It's in a cage so the ball
rolls back to you so you don't need to run after it!
