The Society

CUPokS (formerly ‘CUCPS’ – the Cambridge University Card-Playing Society) was started in 2002, in order to formalise the regular card games of players at the university. The society has grown in the last couple of years, with more students joining and extra events being added each year. This year there is a Old Boys event that will see some old familiar faces returning to Cambridge to try to teach the students a lesson.

At the start of this year we demolished our competitors from ‘the other place’ in the fourth Oxford-Cambridge Varsity Poker match, held at the Oxford Cup VII. This avenged our defeat the previous year at the Oxford Cup VI. Cambridge had previously been undefeated in varsity, winning at the Oxford Cup V and at the inaugural varsity match before that. Overall the varsity score is therefore 3-1 to Cambridge.

In 2006/7, we sent a team to the Warwick Series of Poker, where we came 2nd in the team event, and individual team members came 2nd in the pot-limit Omaha event, and took 2nd and 5th in the shootout competition. We also made a trip that year to St Andrews to play in the UK Student Championships.

We play a variety of cash and tournament poker games, typically (but not exclusively) Texas Hold ‘em for low/medium stakes. Keep checking the website for information on our upcoming events.

Feel free to contact the committee with any of your queries and we will do our best to respond as quickly as possible.
