The venue is the Laser Quest arena opposite Argos at the end of Bradwell's Court (which is off St. Andrew's Street, between Emmanual and Christ's colleges, almost opposite Robert Sayles' dept. store). There is a map of the area here: Bradwell's Court is just above the red '66' marker.
Typically we meet for a few hours of games on Sunday night. The exact deal we get varies from year to year but at the very least you'll get two hours of half price games (approx £10). We're also allowed to program our own variants. No commitment is required at all, so even if you only fancy doing it once you're more than welcome to come along. You must, however, be a society member in order to take part, joining is easy and free (see below).
Anyone! You don't have to bring any student I.D, or even be a student to join the fun. Whatever your degree of skill at Laser Quest all are most welcome. You can join by sending an E-mail request to be on our mailing list (see below). There is no signup fee and no obligation to turn up.
Once you've joined the mailing list you are automatically a member.
If you'd like to be on the mailing list (Essential for time change

For those of you who've never tried Laserquest (also known as Laser Tag or Quasar) before, all participants are kitted out with a pack that has light sensors over your front, back and shoulders and gun (which emits a harmless laser beam). The idea is to shoot the other players' sensors with your gun, while not getting shot by the other players. Play is conducted in a arena with ramps, walkways, walls with random windows in them, sniping positions, etc.
We will usually play all four games in an evening in varying
amounts, starting and ending traditionally with Deathmatch. Complete
rules are given at the start of each game and any small changes will
be announced. For instance, Deathmatch and Team can be played with
unlimited or limited lives and shots, sometimes gun sensors are
turned off to add a little more realism. Below are approximate times
for how long each game takes, and there is usually a few minutes
break in between games while the system is reset.
Death Match (15-20min) |
Team (15min) |
Bases(15min) |
Aliens (5-10min) |
Counter Strike (5-15min) |
Predator (5-10min) |
|
This is an all against all game pitting you against every other player in the arena. At the end of the match the player with the highest score wins. |
Three teams enter the arean, Red/Green/Mixed and attempt to work together to battle the other two teams. There are various variations on this theme. |
Essentially a team game where there is an additional means of scoring points. Wall mounted targets, the colour of your enemies can be taken out, scoring 50 points for your team. |
A small number of aliens(Greens) fight a much larger number of
marines(Reds). Sound unfair? The aliens have much better stats,
specifically immune gun sensors. |
The ultimate in stealth and tactics. With one life and thirty shots per player, two teams battle it out. Both sides start in opposite corners of the arena, with the music turned off. This game puts experienced and novice players on equal footing. Click here for full rules and tips. |
Marines(red) have to survive ten minutes against invulnerable Predators(green) with a long recovery time. Did I mention the Marines only have ten lives? Click here for full rules and tips. |
We are allowed to bring and play our own music to Laser Quest. Previous selections have included music from Unreal Tournament, Quake II, Lemmings remixes, plus a selection of funky beats to keep you moving all night. :-) Feel free to bring what you like and we'll give it a play. :-D
Laserquest is very active, you're moving around the arena all the
the time so it's highly advisable to bring a large bottle of water
with you. We will do our best to provide water for everyone between
games, particularly during summer when the arena is BAKING. :-)
