16th January 2005 (CULERS Organisation & Activities)

On January 20th at 6pm in the Wolfson Lecture Theatre (Lecture Theatre 2) in the Chemistry Department, Dr. Ilham Abuljadayel will present a lecture detailing the retrodifferentiation technology developed by the TriStem corporation. In essence Dr. Abuljadayel's method involves the use of antibodies to induce adult blood cells to return to a haematopoietic or even embryonic stem cell state, bypassing ethical barriers to the use of zygote-derived cells.
As the sole inventor of the technology, which recently featured in New Scientist (9th October 2004, "India's Stem Cell Miracle"), Dr. Abuljadayel is certain to present a fascinating view on this potentially revolutionary contribution to modern medicine. Professor Sir John Gurdon of the Gurdon Institute here in Cambridge has indicated that he intends to attend the lecture and participate in a question session after the presentation.
Entrance will be free to all interested parties.

After considerable thought CULERS has decided to cease the operation of its forum section, since a forum of nearly identical purpose and far greater variety of contributors is maintained by the Immortality Institute. Thanks to everyone who contributed.

2nd October 2004 (CULERS Organisation & Activities)

Our inaugural lecture, "Why Not Forever?" will run from 7-8pm on Thursday, October 14th in the BMS Lecture Theatre (formerly Lecture Theatre 1) at the Chemistry Department. Admission is £1 or free for members of the Society - memberships, priced at £3 for a year or £5 for life, will be available at the door.
Dr. Aubrey de Grey will discuss in detail the reasons for believing radical life extension will be a medical reality within our lifetimes, and the implications of this coming revolution. After the lecture there will be a question and answer session with the speaker followed by free refreshments in the foyer.
You can view the poster advertising the event here.

29th September 2004 (CULERS Organisation & Activities)

As a result of a dearth of participants willing to argue the case against healthy life extension, the inaugural event is now being organised as a lecture hosted by Dr. de Grey followed by a question and answer session. Provisionally the date of the event is to be the 14th of October, in the Chemistry Department's BMS Lecture Theatre (Theatre 1). More details will be available at the Societies Fair or on our posters which will soon be going up around Cambridge.

Plans are underway for the inaugural debate in October, the primary participants in which - it's currently hoped - will be Dr. Aubrey de Grey and Sir Martin Rees, debating under the title "Why Not Forever? The Case for Anti-Aging Medicine". A poster campaign to advertise the existence of CULERS and the debate is also in the works.
