On Monday 1st February the Blues travelled to Basingstoke to face off against the hard-hitting Southampton Spitfires. The Blues took an early two goal lead with a goal from forward Peter Morelli, who scored directly from a faceoff near the end of the first period. The next goal came in breathtaking fashion from Tom Whillier when he buried the puck in the top corner following a spectacular breakaway. The Blues maintained this lead until late in the third period, when the Spitfires rallied back to tie the game after scoring on a powerplay, and then quickly again with a deflected shot. The game remained tied and pressure mounted until with 4:23 left in the third, Blues forward Adrian Camacho-Fielding descended on two Southampton defensemen. Breaking through both of them, Camacho-Fielding moved the puck to the net where it was picked up by Morelli who fired a shot at the Southampton netminder. After the initial save Camacho-Fielding got to the rebound and buried the puck to score the Blues third goal.

With the game at 3 to 2 the Blues fought to hold their lead in the dying minutes of the third. Tension mounted as with 30 seconds remaining Phelps Bondaroff received a delay of game penalty. With Southampton’s netminder pulled out of the net so they could add an extra attacker onto the ice, the Blues faced a stiff final few seconds. However, they eventually prevailed to secure the win by a 3-2 margin. The man of the match, well deserved after his heroic play during the weekend, was Blues net minder Carl Mazurek who turned aside over thirty shots. These two wins move the Blues into a very strong position in the table, however with back-to-back matches against the league leading London Dragons next up, the most important part of the season is yet to come.
