Aims and Introduction

12 years ago, when the fate of Hong Kong was still uncertain, the Fortune Magazine published a cover story titled “The Death of Hong Kong”. Now at the 10th anniversary of Hong Kong, although still thriving, we are again facing a great many challenges.

Still, one thing is certain: In our generation, Hong Kong, along with China, can expect to see major shifts in her politics, economy and society. In such a dynamic and exciting time, young people cannot afford to be apathetic. However, with a myriad of valid yet competing viewpoints, it is difficult to provide civic education as part of a formal school course. We must make our own individual inquires and evaluations. That is what we hope to facilitate.

Through lectures and dialogue with the leaders of today from many fields who may hold very different stances in this conference, CUHKCAS hopes to provide a platform for young leaders in universities and secondary schools to engage with issues such as political reform and economic competitiveness, and foster the critical reflection on Hong Kong’s identity and role in the years to come.

In the long run, we hope that the conference shall be an annual event in which the civic and social awareness of tertiary students and secondary school leaders can be increased, and may one day contribute back to Hong Kong.

The programme consists of a series of short lectures, followed by half an hour of an opportunity for questions raised to speakers by students.
