mailing lists

CUH&H runs five public mailing lists, each with their own independent membership:

  1. The Training Mailing List:
    soc-cuhh-training@lists.cam.ac.uk
This is exclusively for important information regarding training, races and other events. While everyone on the list receives the emails, only a few select committee members can post to it. Any mail sent to the list from an @cam.ac.uk address by unauthorised senders is diverted to the moderators who may forward it to the list if they consider it appropriate. This is a low-volume mailing list.
  2. The Discussion Mailing List:
    soc-cuhh-discussion@lists.cam.ac.uk
This is used for general discussion on running-related issues. If the post involves running, then feel free to use this list. Any member can post to this list.
  3. The Chat Mailing List:
    soc-cuhh-chat@lists.cam.ac.uk
This is used for banter and the like, for arranging informal social gatherings, and for generally keeping in touch with other club members. It can be high volume (depending on what is going on). Any member can post to this list.
  4. The Holiday Mailing List:
    soc-cuhh-hols@lists.cam.ac.uk
This is used by those remaining in Cambridge during the holidays to enable them to contact other runners to arrange sessions without causing too much traffic on the other lists. The main weekly schedule will still be sent out to the Training list, but further discussion about what is going on in Cambridge can be carried on here. This list only really comes to life outside term. Any member can post to this list.
  5. The Marathon Mailing List:
    soc-cuhh-marathon@lists.cam.ac.uk
This is used for matters concerning marathon training. Any member can post to this list.

Some people prefer to be on the Training list only. Indeed the five-list system was created because some members only wanted to receive the important information and nothing else. However, given that many runners like discussion with other like-minded runners, there are three other lists to consider. The vast majority of the people on the Chat list, for example, find it both useful and entertaining. You never know what juicy gossip you might miss if you are not on it.

How to subscribe and unsubscribe

You will automatically be put on these lists if you join CUH&H at the start of the Michaelmas term but you may also subscribe if you are not a member.

You are free to subscribe and unsubscribe at any time by visiting http://lists.cam.ac.uk where, with your Raven* password, you'll be able to look up the above groups and request membership. Once a member, you can use this website to manage your subscriptions or to unsubscribe. It is possible to receive a digest of the day's posts too, and also temporarily stop receiving posts without actually unsubscribing. All this can be done through the web interface. Alternatively, you can email the list owners asking which mailing lists you'd like to be added to.

Finally, the Mailman mailing list system allows automated registration through email commands. An alternative method of subscribing and unsubscribing is to send a blank email (i.e. blank subject line and nothing in the message body) to an automated address. To subscribe or unsubscribe, choose the relevant address from those below and simply send a blank email to it.

To subscribe use one or more of these addresses:

soc-cuhh-training-subscribe@lists.cam.ac.uk
soc-cuhh-discussion-subscribe@lists.cam.ac.uk
soc-cuhh-chat-subscribe@lists.cam.ac.uk
soc-cuhh-hols-subscribe@lists.cam.ac.uk
soc-cuhh-marathon-subscribe@lists.cam.ac.uk

and to unsubscribe use one or more of these addresses:

soc-cuhh-training-unsubscribe@lists.cam.ac.uk
soc-cuhh-discussion-unsubscribe@lists.cam.ac.uk
soc-cuhh-chat-unsubscribe@lists.cam.ac.uk
soc-cuhh-hols-unsubscribe@lists.cam.ac.uk
soc-cuhh-marathon-unsubscribe@lists.cam.ac.uk

Simple, eh?

*NB for those not using their @cam address (eg using hotmail/gmail etc) to manage your subscription without a Raven password you need to go to http://lists.cam.ac.uk and then type in the name of the mailing list you wish to manage (eg soc-cuhh-chat) and then at the bottom of the next screen you can enter your email address and hit the 'unsubscribe or edit options' box. On the next screen you will have to request a password which will be emailed to your registered address, and then that will give you access to the settings.

How to post

Once you are a member you can send a message to everyone in the list by addressing the email to the relevant address (as shown at the top of the screen). Please remember that your message will go to lots of people so make sure it is relevant to that mailing list and does not cause offence.
