Hi everyone,
So far, 70 people from over 20 different academic institutions plus some mathematical research jobs have registered for the BP3 mailing list. This is a thread for people to introduce themselves and say where they're from. It's nice and friendly when participants know each other a bit before the event, and it would be interesting to hear what your research and place of work is like.

To kick things off, I'm at Cambridge which lots of you will be familiar with. I'm end-of-first-year (report looming...) working in aeroacoustics (aeroplane noise). I'm just at that stage where I'm starting to realise the enormous amount of stuff I'll need to understand before the end of my PhD, but don't yet feel like I understand any of it yet!
As a place to work I find the Cambridge maths depts big, I think there are roughly 45 PhD students in each year between them, which I quite like. It's also extremely busy during term, in contrast to some weeks in the summer when it suddenly gets very empty.
I think most of the academics are actually quite friendly it's just you can feel a bit intimidated approaching them at first. Certainly a lot of them have been extrememly helpful with organising Beyond Part III.
My impression is that there's a good amount of interaction between pure and applied students, CUGMS holds quite a few social events for all PhD students. I'd be interested to hear what social events get organised at other maths depts, and if there are other graduate maths socities about.
