CUGMS Social Events

One of the main aims of the CUGMS is to have fun! The committee organise a number of social events throughout the year to which all members are invited. We also encourage members to organise their own events. So, if you have an idea, do get in touch and we'll try to provide help with either time or money. Or maybe you already run a regular event, but want to start advertising it more widely, or get some funding from us. In order to qualify for a subsidy from us your event must be open to all CUGMS members and be advertised to them appropriately.

(Exciting future event! Check out Beyond Part III.)

Ongoing events

Happy Hour – beer & nibbles at the CMS every Friday at 5, open to everyone in the maths departments. Currently overseen by Maxi (mjev2) who always needs more volunteers to help run it. If you enjoy Happy Hour and want to see it continue (or have a great idea for a poster!) then please get in touch.
Games evenings - cards and board games over pizza in the evening at the CMS. Contact Julia (jg352) to be emailed when a games evening is planned, or just keep an eye on the calendar.
Do bring new games and desklamps (for when the lights get switched off!).

Occasional events

Film and pizza nights – MR2 is a really good cinema. The committee hold film nights when they remember, but if you'd like to reduce the wait til the next one just get hold of a good film on DVD and tell us when you'd like to show it. We can probably organise cheap pizza too.
Formal halls – it's usually not too much work organising a mass formal and we might well be able to subsidise the wine. Contact one of the committee if you'd like to host one at your college.
Football (both full size and table varieties)
Lunches – get people out of their offices, and expand your usual lunch crowd. This could be just announcing a time and place for people to bring their own, or you could show off your culinary skills by bringing some food for all, or getting everyone to contribute.
Yoga – sessions used to be run at the CMS, but we didn’t have quite enough people to keep it up. We would need a definite group of around 15 to start it up again.

Annual events

Induction days and start of year pizza – a short introduction to life as a PhD student and afterwards we invite all PhDs for pizza to welcome the new guys.
End of year picnic – for all Part III and PhD students on the day the Part III exams finish.
