What is CUGMS?

Who we are

The Cambridge University Graduate Mathematics Society (CUGMS) was founded in October 2006 to promote interaction, both social and academic, between PhD students studying mathematics. All current Cambridge maths PhD students are members, and many of our social events are organised primarily for them. However, most of our academic events are open to all interested, and our members also run events for Part III students.

What we do

Anything our members want! We rely on your participation and good ideas to keep CUGMS fun and interesting. We do have some funding from the departments, so get in touch if you want to organise something new. If you're a maths PhD student elsewhere you may be interested in attending one of our conferences, organised by and for graduate students (also see Beyond Part III).

Events

Our activities roughly fall into three categories. Check out the calendar to see what's coming up.
Social — games evenings, formal halls, picnics, pizza & film nights, table football tournaments... we're sure you have plenty more ideas, why not suggest a future event?
Academic — seminars by graduate students aimed at graduates or undergraduates, either weekly series or whole conferences. If you ever want to give a talk, there are lots of people who'd love to hear from you.
Part III — the Part III course is unique, it brings together huge numbers of fantastic young mathematicians from all over the world. Together with Marj Batchelor, CUGMS members run several events which are great fun to get involved with.

Website

As well as holding events, we exist to provide information and help to CUGMS members and Part III students during and after their time at the CMS. This is partly done via the Forums and Useful info sections of the website, so do take a look. Also see this page for more information on how to use the site, and getting a web account.
