Vintage Jazz from Cambridge
Based at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, the C. U. "Fitz" Swing Band is a full sized student big band playing music ranging from Classic Buddy Rich and Count Basie to some more modern charts and our own arrangements. We play gigs from the best of the May Balls to large concerts, and have recorded seven CDs, the latest of which is "Back in the Studio", recorded in December 2012.
Fitz Swing was formed in 1990 at Fitzwilliam College, but quickly expanded to take in musicians from all over the University. Members come from every academic discipline, from astrophysics to zoology. The band has a high profile in Cambridge, performing at a variety of concert venues every year, plus the best of the University May Balls, society events and charity functions as well as private parties in Cambridge and beyond.
We play music ranging from classic swing through to big band jazz, Latin and funk, and try to cater for as many tastes as possible. Our repertoire includes classics such as Count Basie's Flight of the Foo Birds and Splanky. Our vocal numbers include songs made famous by Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald, and our newer charts include Michael Bublé, Arturo Sandoval and National Youth Jazz Orchestra arrangements.
Within the band, we have talented vocalists who sing solo numbers and duets as well as various small groups, all of whom are happy to perform separately.
2012-2013 was unanimously agreed to be an excellent year, with healthy helpings of gigs home and away, well-received appearances at large number of May Balls, climaxing with our tour to Prague in September, which mixed gothic architecture, a backstreet high-quality jazz festival and a big famous city into one memorable whole.
Fitz are available for booking from pretty much anybody, and are probably performing quite soon - check out the contact and events pages.
