Races

World Solar Challenge (www.wsc.org.au)

Founded in 1987, this is the 20 th anniversary of the world’s premier solar race. The 2007 route heads south from Darwin all the 3021km to Adelaide, cutting right across the Australian continent. In the last race, cars travelled at speeds up to 130km/hr and support teams had a hard time keeping up – this year, rules have been altered to slow the vehicles down, with the added benefit of making them closer to practical vehicles.

Zero Rally Africa (www.zerorallyafrica.com)

A unique, carbon-neutral car rally crossing Zambia, Namibia and South Africa. The rally will travel through some of the most dramatic landscape in the world including the greatest solar radiation area on earth. The event will be an endurance challenge, a demonstration of the viability and practicality of planet-friendly vehicles.

American Solar Challenge (www.americansolarchallenge.org)

Runs from Texas to Vancouver. The route follows the main highways and includes stops in towns along the way for promotion of sustainable transport, publicity and to attract the media. The teams are competing with traffic as much as the other solar cars!

South African Solar Challenge (www.solarchallenge.org.za)

A debut race in 2008 will start in Johannesburg and end in Pretoria, with a mixture of forty international and local teams. With support from the South African Government, this will be the first solar car event in Africa, taking place from 22nd September to 8th October 2008.

University

Cambridge University Engineering Department (www.eng.cam.ac.uk)

A department within the University of Cambridge. The department has supported the team by giving the engineers in our team permission to do fourth year (thesis) projects on the vehicle. We have also received support and promotion by the Cambridge University Engineering Society.
