Information on hunting with the Cambridge University Drag Hounds

These are some guidelines of what to do on a day's hunting with the Drag Hounds. If you have any other queries please do not hesitate to contact the masters. We love to welcome new people and are happy to help.

The Meet

  • You do not have to ring ahead to let us know you plan to come out for a day's hunting, it is fine to arrive on the day.
  • Please arrive in good time to be unloaded and at the meet by one o'clock.
  • If you have to park on the road please try to park on the same side as other horse vehicles, avoiding parking in front of gateways or mowed grass verges.
  • Please have your cap ready to pay to whoever is collecting the cap on the day. The cap is £20 for students/pony club members and £40 for adults (cash or cheques payable to Cambridge University Draghounds).
  • Please listen to what the fieldmaster has to say at the meet, as often land owners have specific requests for us to adhere to.

Hunting

Please always make sure to give hounds plenty of room, and never jump a fence if a hound is underneath

  • Please stay behind the fieldmaster at all times unless specifically told otherwise.
  • At a fence please wait for the horse in front to jump clear before attempting it yourself.
  • If you see a danger please inform those behind you, for example if you see a hole please shout "ware hole" or "hole on the left/right".
  • Please keep off any crops you see, and if you are going through a field of crops please follow in single file behind the master.
  • If you break a fence/jump please try to remeber where and what and inform the master so we can make sure it is mended after the day.
  • If you leave the day early please hack back via the roads unless directed otherwise.
  • We follow a set trail so please try to keep up and only go in fields where the fieldmaster goes unless told otherwise (for example a non-jumping alternative).
  • If you open a gate it is your responsibility to close it behind you.
  • A green band on a horse's tail means it is young/new to hunting. A red band means the horse may kick so beware.
  • If we ride on the road please give way to traffic and ride on the left hand side avoiding mowed grass verges.

Tea

  • After putting the horses away at the end of hunting we always provide a tea. Everyone who was huning/following is very welcome. Tea is a great way to get to know people within the hunt and thank our landowners, so we do encourage people to stay for this.

Dress

  • Cream/fawn breeches/jodhpurs
  • Shirt and tie or stock
  • Tweed jacket or black/navy hunt coat (wax jackets may be worn in severe weather).
  • Velvet or skull caps with plain dark coloured silk.
  • Long black boots or short boots and gaiters (Brown boots may be worn with a tweed jacket).
  • Please make sure long hair is tied back and put in a hairnet
