To log in the user types carriage return, which is answered immediately by *** WAIT. There may be a short pause before the system types USER. The user then types his initials and number; this can optionally be followed by a strokes and a title, but no brackets or strokes are necessary. If the user is recognised and has a password the system types a row of 8 superimposed H, I and X over which the user types his password. (The use of a password is optional, and initially all passwords are unset.) Several attempts are allowed at the name and password if a typing error is made. Once the user is recognised, provided that the system is not overloaded
STARTED DATE ... TIME ...
is typed followed by the message of the day (if any). The system then waits for certain optional commands and the user may return to this status in the middle of a command by typing BREAK or @ F; this may be used to avoid unwanted messages. The commands available are as follows:

| FREE | Types current number of users in Free mode | ||||||||
| MAXFREE | Types maximum number of users in Free mode | ||||||||

| MAXSTORE | Types maximum total limstore of Free mode users | ||||||||
| MAXLIM | Types maximum individual limstore of Free mode users |
After typing any sequence of these commands, the user types either GO or FINISH. After typing GO, nothing else should be typed until the system responds with READY. After typing FINISH, the user is logged out, the system responding with
FINISHED DATE ... TIME ...
The FINISH command can be typed at any time that the console is in command status, and will cause a log-out.
In the initial version, checks are imposed by MAXLOAD, MAXFREE, MAXSTORE and MAXLIM as defined above. A priority user is free from the controls but still contributes towards the total. Each user has a daily allocation of COMP and EXEC.
