Rules for Canoeing on the River Cam

Club Participation Statement:

The activities undertaken by Cambridge University Canoe Club carry an element of risk, including the risk of injury and death. Participants must make their own decisions about participation in any activity and are empowered to ask questions if in doubt about the nature or risks inherent in any activity.

Rules on the River Cam:

  • A group canoeing on the Cam must consist of at least 3 people.

  • At least one member of the group must hold the BCU 3 star award or the entire group must hold the BCU 2 star award.

  • Buoyancy aids must be worn at all times.

  • Paddlers must act in a responsible and safe manner.

  • Paddlers should take care lifting boats to avoid the risk of injury. Ask if you are unsure how to lift safely.

  • Helmets must be worn if paddling near weirs. Shooting weirs is not allowed.

N.B. Competent paddlers may be granted permission to paddle alone or in groups of less than the specified number. This is at the discretion of the Commodore. Paddlers who wish to take advantage of this discretion should contact the Commodore. Any paddler who believes they paddle at the appropriate standard but does not hold the BCU award should also contact the Commodore.
