CUC Council Meeting Thursday 19 January 2006, 6:30pm Present - Will Carroll (MethSoc), Gordon Lawrence (convenor), Richard Smith (treasurer), Richard Hewitt (Taize), Chris Hack (Fisher Society), Jenny Auton, Emma Riseborough (secretary), Steven Cooper (CCMS) Apologies - Sam Denis (SPEAK) 1) Opened with the Lord's prayer 2) Holocaust Memorial Day (Friday 27 Jan, lunchtime) - it was agreed that Emma and Gordon would do a reading, representing CUC. 3) CUFF (Cambridge University Faiths Forum) - should CUC affiliate to them? Problem that if we affiliate, member societies implicitly affiliate, so we need to ask member societies whether they want to affiliate, and then they can choose to affiliate individually, or if all member societies wanted to affiliate and were happy for CUC to act on their behalf, this could be possible. So, society reps need to ask their members ASAP whether they would like to affiliate with CUFF. 4) Fusion - it was pointed out that if a Fusion rep does not come to meetings, they will be disaffiliated. 5) Jenny spoke about SPEAK's plan to bring the world's biggest dress to Cambridge, asking for the Council's help to get church partners to give money and volunteers to the project. Contact email addresses for churches are in the CUC booklet, which may help. 6) Discussion groups - It was felt that, last term, people came to the groups with different expectations, so we need to be clearer in our aims. It was agreed that tighter chairing is needed - to tell people when to speak if they continue making the same point. The possibility of it being more of a talk with questions was raised. It was agreed that people should introduce themselves at the beginning of the evening. It was requested that when the groups are advertised, more information should be given about them - the speaker could give their talk a title. Steven will chair the talks by Ben Quash and Janet Tollington, Jenny will chair Ian Hamilton's talk, Christ will chair Abbott Stephen's and Richard Smith will chair Reg Quirk's talk. 7) CUC unity service - sorted. Those involved should meet at 4pm for a rehearsal. The drum kit will be delivered in the afternoon. 8) SPEAK invites us to a prayer walk 3:30pm 4 Feb at Emmanuel URC. The plan is to make burdens and then walk round the city centre with them, praying for justice and care for the poor in Cambridge. 9) Charity Quiz, Friday 10 Feb, Fisher House library.
