Minutes of the SCC 5th October 2003, 3pm in the Fisher House Library. 1. The meeting was opened in prayer by Carys at 15:10 (?) 2. Present: Carys Underdown (SCM); Ed Hutchinson, Pete Smith (Fisher House); Josh Robinson (Taize Worship Group); Rachel Gooderson (SPEAK); Chris Rayson (MethSoc). Also: Peter Crawford (Revelate); Steven Cooper. Apologies: Amy (for going to be late) (CCMS); Rev'd David Cowan (Lutherans) (by email before the meeting but I hadn't read it); Rev'd Ruth Adam (Senior Treasurer) (by email after the meeting). 3/4. Minutes were read; matters arising being discussed as they arose. - OrthSoc are proving difficult to contact; CARYS will investigate if they still exist by emailing Fr Raphael. - CGS are also being quiet. CARYS to email them. - Trinity Side Chapel will be fine for Unity Prayers - Punt race went well, with many teams (althoguh Fusion's punts both failed to finish due to problems with children). MethSoc came 1st, 2nd and 4th. - Unitarians have been included in the list of Churches. - CICCU exec have not responded about a stall at the Freshers' Fayre. - Prelimanary information was not, in the end, provided to the chaplains 2 weeks in advance for freshers. - Cambridge Building Society now holds our account. (Alex Long (Ark) arrived at 15:20) 5. Freshers' Fair - Rota was passed round for people to sign up. Steven Cooper noted that last year the stall was manned by people who didn't really know what the SCC was. We must make sure that people are properly briefed. - At the stall, Church notices will be display if we have space, but they are low priority. (Amy Arthur (CCMS) arrived at 15:30) - Peter Crawford introduced Revelate. This is a social support group for religious LBGT students. This is a trial year. It is for all religions, though initiators were Christians and currently only Christians and Jews have been contacted/got involved. There will be a weekly drop-in group, social events a few times a term and a confidential e-mail list. It will not be confrontational nor promote or condemn a particular lifestyle. The role is to be a group providing pattoral care. It was asked that we could inform our respective societies, and display fliers on our stall. It is not an official Cambridge society (in terms of registration with the proctors) and is in its very early sages. - Attendees were happy with displaying leaflets if there is room. - It was suggested that Peter Crawford were added to the SCC mailing list. - Info will be sent to the list for representatives to circulate to their societies. - Josh suggested that this be given priority over churches if there is limited space. 6. SCC Fresher's Fayre - Trinity Side Chapel booked 1:30-3:30 - Josh offered to bring CDs, CARYS to investigate CD player with Ruth. - CARYS to e-mail churches inviting them to provide info/have a stall, and chaplains so that Freshers' are encouraged to come along. - Publicity Steven Cooper to produce material Josh offered cheap photocopying of 200 fliers. - Carys to e-mail CICCU to invite them (15:45 Rachel left) 7. Publicity - Copies of "What's Christian in Cambridge" were distributed. It was agreed that CICCU should be consulted about the form (and existence) of their entry. It was agreed not to included them without their express consent, because of the explicitly SCC nature of the flyer. - This raised issues of tact in explaining the CICCU/SCC difference if asked at the CUSU Fair. CICCU is an evangelical/evangelistic society, the SCC is an umbrella group of Christian Societies. - CARYS to contact CICCU WRT the Societies' list. - CARYS to contact the Lutheran Society to confirm their involvemnt. - Minor typos were also discuss. CARYS to check consistency WRT apostrophes and full stops on abbreviations. (Pete Smith left at 16:05) - SCM to be removed from the societies' list. - Photocopying- Peter Crawford will photocopy flyers. 8. Prayer Meetings - Trinity Side Chapel booked for 1:15 on 15th October. - Publicity exists. - Renamed "SCC Prayer Meeting" a relevant subtitle would be needed. Max 1/2 hour, tell people 20mins. - Alex to take responsibility for planning this and co-ordinate the next few. Planning 2 weeks in advance would allow each to be promoted at the previous one. Trinity Side Chapel to be booked provisionally for all meetings, although venue changes may needed for certain weeks (to be promoted in as special events) 9. Unity Service - Chris has booked Wesley but will check that this is still okay - People to think about this and bring ideas to the next mmeting. - To be promoted strongly in Fresher's Fair - CARYS to ask CICCU the dates of their Mission. - People to investigate preachers and present possibilities at the next meeting. Josh mentioned Rev'd Andrew Brown (Unitarian Minister) Chris mentioned Rev'd Brian Beck (Former president and secretary of Methodist conference who lives in Cambridge) Steven noted that both the current president and vice-president (Judy Jarvis) of Methodist Conference were free on that date. 10. Church Crawl. - AMY, CARYS and CHRIS to co-ordinate. - Them to meet sometime in the week beginning 12th October, date to be decided when timetables are known. 11. 5-a-side tournament - Mixed views on the desirablity of such an event. - To be discussed at a later meeting to occur in Lent term - which was felt to be better in terms of balance of events too. - People to raise the idea with their societies to see what enthusiasm for such an event would be. 12. AOB: Website is approved. Address to be publicised. - Chris to be responsible. - Paper copies of minutes and agenda to be provided sufficient for numbers expected. Carys apologised for the failure of that this time. She had hoped Fisher House might have a photocopier, which is indeed the case; unfortunately it was broken. - Meetings should be limited to 1 hour. - More notice on agendas - Prompt start. 13. Date and time of next meeting - Tuesday 11th November at 7:30pm - Alex offered his room, opposite the front of Selwyn. 14. Closed with the Grace at 16:50.
