SCC Minutes, 13th May 2003
Matters arising from the minutes of the last meeting – Josh will probably sort out a bank account with Smile.
The Punt race is to be held on Saturday the 14th at 2pm. Informally inviting CICCU was discussed; Josh suggested asking people individually, rather than inviting CICCU as a whole. Rules of the punt race were discussed; Luke confessed to cheating last year by using a paddle.
Carys suggested that we move the 5-a-side tournament (requested by Steven Cooper at the last meeting) to Michaelmas. Josh put forward the idea of having a picnic instead, with a football “or a frisbee, or something.” The final decision was to have the 5-a-side in Michaelmas, advertising it at the Societies Fair, and to support each others’ garden parties and May week events rather than creating another one.
Unity Prayers are to be left for this term and re-started in Michaelmas, beginning with the first Wednesday lunchtime of term. The format of the prayers was discussed: Rachel suggested an informal and relaxed space to share a meal and pray together. The different needs of various societies space-wise were then discussed, and Carys decided to contact Fisher house, as there are various different spaces available there.
The direction of the society was the next item on the agenda; the main points that came up were how often we should meet, what kind of events we should be putting on, and whether we need to do more, or to raise our profile.
Unity prayers came up again at this point: Alex suggested raising the profile of the prayers to increase momentum in the society. Rachel suggested praying specifically for the work of each others’ societies, at which Amy re-suggested a newsletter and more contact for support of the specific needs of societies.
Carys re-suggested a church crawl, which was agreed for All Saint’s Sunday next term. There was then a five-minute interlude for various jokes about bringing score-boards for sermons.
At this point Alex and Rachel left, and Rachel plugged Arise on her way down the stairs.
Carys suggested having speakers, and Amy raised a concern that this would produce anti-CICCUness or rivalry, or at least imply it. There was much discussion about how far we can act as a society in our own right rather than a collection of societies, and the final decision was that separate societies should be encouraged to do more to invite the SCC list to their own events, rather than arrange events centrally.
The newsletter idea was then re-re-suggested, and Josh asked whether Christian Cambridge wasn’t enough. He suggested asking Ruth to alter the format or raise the profile. Carys suggested more advertising through college chapels. There followed further discussion about whether people should know who we are, with Josh putting forward the idea that the SCC should stay behind the scenes and not attempt to raise its own profile.
Rachel and Becky have been added to the e-mail list; old people to be left on the list unless they complain.
The meeting closed with the Grace at 2.15.
