SCC meeting 5:30pm, 22nd January 2003 Minutes 1 Apologies for absence. Present: Gavin Shuker (Convenor, Fusion), Alex Long (Treasurer, Ark), Carys Underdown (MethSoc) and Amy Arthur (CCMS) Apologies for absence were received from Dan Auger (Secretary, SCM), Josh Robinson (Taize), James Ransley (CGS) and Eduardo Piano (Fisher society) 2 Minutes of the previous meetings. The minutes for the meetings held on 7th October 2002 and 15th January 2003 were agreed to have been a fair and accurate record. 3 SCC unity service - Tuesday 25th February The time for the main SCC unity service was discussed; Carys suggested a later time than 7pm. It was agreed that with so few people present the time should be decided over e-mail. Gavin agreed to check possible times at Michaelhouse. Gavin later agreed to take charge of this event as a whole and co-ordinate the arrangements with the SCC committee via e-mail. 4 One World Week fair A One World Week religious fair is to be held on 6th February 2003, to which SCC had been invited, along with other Christian societies and representatives of other faiths. It was noted that Fusion, CGS and MethSoc had agreed to participate at this event. Gavin added that as SCC is not itself a separate Christian denomination the SCC would not bring anything distinctively "extra" to such an event and argued that it should be for individual societies to decide whether to take part. Amy suggested that the event could well take on either a competitive or a bland, pluralist air; either way, participation would risk giving a false impression of SCC. Gavin added that on specific religious issues SCC would not be in a position to speak on behalf of all its member societies. It was therefore agreed that SCC would not take part. 5 SCC prayers for unity (Friday 24th January) Amy informed the committee that SCC had received permission to use Christ^Òs College side-Chapel for this event. It was agreed to make sure that the door to the chapel was left open during the day to make the building welcoming, but to close it during the afternoon service. On Amy's suggestion, the committee agreed to use prayer cards during the service and that people who came to the event could leave their cards on the altar after making their own individual prayers. Carys offered to take charge of this event, as Gavin will be away. Amy argued that there should be lots of space for individual prayers and contributions during the service and that the service should be planned and presented as the culmination to the day of prayer. 6 Meetings Gavin mentioned the issue of the length and number of SCC meetings, a problem that had been raised by James Ransley in a conversation with Gavin. The committee agreed that James was right to raise this issue and Carys proposed that SCC meet more regularly. She suggested that SCC contact and learn from a similar organisation at Durham university. Alex suggested that in the future SCC meet at least twice a term, but Gavin proposed instead that SCC only aim to meet before a major event (such as the Lent term unity service). No decision was taken and it was agreed that next year's SCC committee should make it clear at the start of the year how frequently and for how long the committee would meet. 7 CGS Gavin noted that James Ransley, while very supportive himself of the work of SCC, felt unable to commit next year's CGS committee to involvement with SCC. It was agreed to discuss CGS' degree of commitment with their new committee. 8 E-mail list Amy suggested that SCC should use its e-mail list more frequently; a regular newsletter was proposed. It was agreed that next year's committee should look into arranging such a newsletter and co-ordinate such a use of the e-mail list with the ChristianCambridge website. 9 Publicity It was agreed that SCC needed to raise its profile among students and that this should be a high priority for this and the next committee. It was further agreed that there should be another SCC freshers' fair in October 2003. 10 New committee It was agreed to change committees early in the Easter term. 11 Next meeting No time was agreed for the next meeting. 12 Fellowship of the Ring. The meeting closed at 6:30pm with the Grace.
