CUC exists to foster communication, understanding and support between Christian groups and between all Christians in Cambridge, and to bear witness to their unity in the worship of Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour. |
SCC: A New VisionSince the mid-1990s the Cambridge Student Christian Council (SCC) has been the umbrella group for student Christian societies, dedicated to promoting communication, understanding and support between Christian groups (for more details see the Rough Guide). In Easter Term 2004, representatives of the member societies agreed on a set of proposals for a new structure for what was then the SCC, with the intention of creating an organisation that would realise the aims and purpose of the SCC more actively and visibly, and of which many more individuals than previously would be afforded a real awareness and sense of ownership and participation; an organisation which would be open to all individual members of affiliated Christian societies, and any other individuals who wished to join. To reflect these changes, this new organisation has a new name – Christians in Unity in Cambridge (CUC). The purpose of CUC remains that of the SCC – to foster communication, understanding and support between the various Christian societies and between all Christians in Cambridge, united in the worship of Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, and to bear witness to that same unity. All Christian student groups and societies in Cambridge are encouraged to affiliate formally to CUC. Each individual member of a CUC-affiliated society or group has the opportunity to register as a member of CUC through that group. Any individual is welcome to join CUC – membership of an affiliated society is not a requirement for membership of CUC. Every member of CUC should receive periodically a CUC term card, and, as far as possible, each college should have one or more CUC representative. Initially, the main practical activity within CUC will be the sending of a weekly email bulletin to all members advertising all Christian activities for the week, as submitted by affiliated societies (or others). Members may opt not to receive the weekly bulletin if they wish. There are also CUC events from time to time as organised by the CUC Council (along similar lines to those previously organised by the SCC; e.g. a Unity Service during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity).
