2005/6
Vancouver Trophy Victory for AchillesOn Saturday 26th August Achilles resurrected the Vancouver Trophy Match after a long absence from the fixture list. Being the current holders of the trophy, Achilles wanted to put on a good performance whilst hosting some well respected clubs such as Woodford Green, Newham & Essex Beagles, Blackheath & Bromley, Highgate Harriers and not forgetting Humphrey's beloved Kingston & Poly. The scores were very close on the Men's side, but by dominating the Women's competition, Achilles retained the trophy and it looks set to become a regular, highly competitive fixture.
I'd like to say thank you to the Cambridge athletes that competed, helped out and supported, but special thanks go to Achilles for organising yet another great event.
Former CUAC athlete in European FinalAndy Baddeley finished an excellent 6th in the 1500m at the European Championships.

Agbo excels in FranceWhilst the rest of CUAC were competing at BUSA Indoors in torrid Sheffield, Phyllis Agbo was performing lifetime bests in the slightly less exotic location of Eaubonne, France. Selected to compete in the pentathlon as part of an Under 23 GB Team, Phyllis helped to secure victory over France and Spain. Nelson would be proud.
From uk:athletics:
'Completing a GB 1-2-3 was Phyllis Agbo (Thames Valley Harriers) with 3933, which puts her 27th Senior all-time and eighth on the Under 23 list. She covered the 60m hurdles in 8.64 seconds, high jumped 1.66m, put the shot an indoor PB 11.87m, long jumped an indoor PB 5.89m and ran 800m in 2:31.76, a PB by almost three seconds. It meant she beat her previous points best by 202 to confirm she is over injuries that have plagued her for much of the last three years.'
CUAC Annual Dinners make you fast Saturday's club dinner at Peterhouse went so well, it received some publicity on the uk:athletics website the next day:
'Hardly a metre covered four of the teams after the 800m and 600m stages. But Ben Carne ran like a man inspired on London North’s 600m stage. Fresh from listening to “an inspiring speech” by renowned coach Malcolm Arnold at the Cambridge University AC Dinner last night, he sped round in 1:19.6 and handed over...'
Fantastic stuff! Big thanks to Richard Ward for the massive organisation on his part and congrats to Andy Owen, Clare Palmer and Dan Bray on their speeches.
Cambridge beat Loughborough, UWIC et al.
From TCS
On an enchanting Valentines Day at the Birmingham National Indoor Arena, The CUAC Mens' team put on an astonishing performance in their first fixture of 2006, to beat Loughborough, UWIC, Birmingham, Brunel, The Army, Navy and RAF! Nothing should be taken away from the women's team either, who scored a fantastic 3rd place.
Mens' team:
Under the combined leadership of President Andy Owen and Captain Dan Bray, the mens' team defeated both the reigning BUSA Indoor & Outdoor Champions, UWIC and Loughborough respectively.
Donning the new CUAC all-in-one lycra sprint suit, fresher Ben Richardson powered through to a speedy seasons opener of 7.12 in the 60m to take 2nd place overall, a position he matched later in the 60m Hurdles (8.41). In the 300m, Dan Bray dominated his race in a time of 34.82, whilst Ben Carne also sped to a fast 35.32. Producing the 3rd fastest time of the day, Bray created an unassailable lead in the early stages, and was only bettered overall by a guesting Olympic athlete and a current European Silver medallist. Club President Andy Owen had a fine run in the 600m, recording a time of 1:21.9 for 3rd. In the distance races, Paolo Natali (3rd, 1000m, 2:28.81) and Richard Ward (3000m) both put on impressive performances. Ward particularly so, as he tracked a high-class guesting athlete stride for stride around the course to finish in 8:18.92, a long way clear of the 2nd scoring position. Humphrey Waddington, another fresher talent, leapt to 3rd place positions in both the Long and Triple Jumps with 6.46m and 13.13m. Ramanan Navaratnam, Tom Wolf (1.90 HJ) and Mike Collins completed the scoring team.
The overall result of the day was dependent on the 4x200m relay, with 4 teams still in contention. Richardson & Carne ran inspirationally on legs 1 and 2 to lead the favoured Loughborough and UWIC teams. Owen found the going tough on leg 3 and passed over to Bray in a close 3rd place, who maintained the position. The time of 1:30.05 would have been good for BUSA bronze at last years indoor champs.
The overall mens' result was
1 Cambridge 72
2 Loughborough 68
3 Brunel 67
4 UWIC 66
5 Birmingham 49
6 RAF 41
7 Army 34
8 Navy 25
Womens' Team:
The girls team also excelled themselves on the day, achieving well beyond expectation. The female cuac force boasted merely seven competitors; although lacking in quantity, evidently full of quality as they achieved third place on the day; beaten only by the giants Loughborough and Brunel. Special thanks from Captain Clare Palmer go out to the girls: Phyllis Agbo, Grace Clements, Alice Swift, Jess Fogarty, Naomi Millner and Catherine Wood; for some fantastic performances, with personal bests spread all over the results sheet. It was a great sign of things to come as the season really begins to take stride.
Fast times all-roundAt the Inter-City Cup final on Sun 19th Feb, Rich Ward completed his first 1500m race since the US Tour last April, with a useful time of 3:51.20. Ben Carne also provided a 600m leg in the medley relay and sped round in 1:19.6.
Paolo Natali has been producing the goods in his native Italy. In recent weeks he has clocked 3:55.29 for 1500m and 1:54.14 for the 800m.

Freshers Varsity Match Double Double SuccessFor the second year running, CUAC lifted both the mens and womens Freshers match trophies. This is a direct result of the fantastic talent that has made it's way into Cambridge this year, personified in Ben Richardson, Humphrey Waddington and Alison Hackney. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to deduce that Cambridge have the more talented athletes from the past 2 years, which bodes very well for future success.
