The Administrative Officer
John Walker
The Administrative Officer deals with a multitude of tasks. He
makes the first contact when prospective visitees are referred to us by Social Services
or other charitable organizations, assessing their needs and finding out what they
are looking for in a visitor. He is also the first point of call for new volunteers:
managing the vetting procedure and helping link the new visitor up with the right visitee.
In between he handles routine correspondence and calls from visitees, visitors and others.
He also edits the Contact Newsletter. When our termly parties roll around, his logistical
skills come into play: planning transport, food and entertainment. As if all that wasn't
enough, he also regularly visits those for whom we have as yet been unable to find a
volunteer - as our waiting list is always long, this is an especially important task. Above all,
the Worker brings continuity and years of experience to an organization whose management team
changes annually.
The Student Management Committee
Whereas the Contact Administrative Officer handles the day-to-day running of Contact, the Committee (elected annually) identifies priorities and shapes policy on issues like recruitment and fundraising. The Committee meets regularly to organize the termly parties for visitees, to plan fund-raising events and campaigns, and to work out ways of shortening that ever-present waiting list of those for whom we cannot find a visitor.
