In a land far away, at a different time,
By an enchanted lake aglow with moonshine,
Sits handsome Prince Siegfried looking up high
At a flight of swans crossing the sky.
He ponders his fate as their path starts to fall:
He must choose a wife at the next night’s ball.

The swans set their course for the ambling river,
As Siegfried leaps up and grabs for his quiver.
He aims with his hand but shoots with his heart,
His arrow flies high and the birds draw apart.
A beautiful shape comes into his sight;
A swan as a woman, transformed by moonlight.

"I am Princess Odette, bound by curse as a swan,
By night I am woman, but bird from the Dawn."

The Prince is transfixed, "I’ll save you," swears he, "On the night of the ball, my wife you shall be!"

Von Rothbart the mage, who had cast the charm,
Was enraged by this oath and planned further harm.

The eve of the ball arrived all too soon,
And the guests entered in by the light of the moon.

A woman - Odile, disguised as Odette,
Was led to the Prince, ensnared by the net,
He takes her to dance and clasps her pale hand,
Naming her as his wife and princess of the land.

A cry is heard from the swans high above,
Too late, for it’s done, he’s lost his true love!
Siegfried jumps back and darts to the lake,
The lifeless Odette in his strong arms he takes,
Looks into her face and brushes her lips.
She stirs at the touch of her true love’s kiss.

I have read and understand the Terms and Conditions

Clare May Ball 2008 Ticketing FAQs

Booking tickets:

Q I have friends from other universities who want to come to the ball. Is there a student discount price?
A No. Because the event is organised primarily for Clare and Cambridge University students they get the student price, and all non-university members, Alumni and Fellows have to pay the higher price.

Q I want to work at Clare May Ball 2008, but if I don’t get a place I still want to go to the ball. Should I apply for a ticket as well, in case I don’t get to work?
A Yes. If you are subsequently offered a place to work, then we will refund the full price of your ticket, without retaining the £ 30 deposit.

Q I have a disability / illness which will affect my enjoyment of the ball, can you cater for my special requirements or give me a discounted ticket?
A This might be possible, please email enquiries@claremayball.com with your query.

Q I am a member of Clare College. Can I book tickets for people from other colleges or non-University members without attending the ball myself?
A No. Advance booking is a privelage for college members wishing to attend their ball and is only available to them.

Q I am a student or alumni of the University. Can I book tickets for other people without attending myself?
A No. Booking is only available for those connected to the University who are attending the ball themselves.

Refund Policy:

Q Why are you taking a £ 30 non-refundable deposit?
A Last year large numbers of people bought tickets and subsequently cancelled them. This causes a huge amount of administrative work for the committee at a time when they should be revising for their exams! Because of this we have created a more stringent refund policy to discourage cancellations.

Q Why are tickets non-refundable after 1st May?
A Last year large numbers of people bought tickets and subsequently tried to cancel them very late on. At this stage it can be difficult and time consuming for the committee to re-sell the tickets. Furthermore, as each ticket is printed with the name of the ticket-holder, once it is printed it can’t be re-sold.

Paying for Tickets:

Q How do I pay for my ticket?
A You hand in cheque to the committee. For Clare students, the cheque collection day is Sunday 10th February, from 6pm - 10pm in the Latimer room, Old Court. For the rest of the university, payment is Sunday 24th February, from 6pm - 10pm in the Latimer room, Old Court. There is no advantage to arriving early on these days, as allocation of tickets is dependant upon the strict order of online booking, which is recorded in our data-base.

Q Can I pay in cash for my ticket?
AYes, and you will need to show some ID or your student card when doing so. You can only pay in cash on the cheque collection days, and will need to fill out a form.

Q Who should I make my cheque payable to?
APayment should be made by cheque payable to Clare College May Ball.

Q I can’t come to hand in my cheque on that day. What should I do?
A You should post the cheque to Jonathan Bird, Old Court, Trinity Lane, Cambridge CB2 1TL

Q Why do you want me to pay in a cheque before I’ve found out whether or not I’ve got a ticket?
A Every year some people book tickets online and then fail to turn up to hand in their cheques. Therefore we won’t know precisely who has got a ticket and who is still on the waiting list until after the cheque collection day.

Q I’ve forgotten to hand in my cheque. Do I still have a ticket? Who should I contact?
A Email tickets@claremayball.com as soon as possible to find out whether your ticket has been allocated to someone else yet.

Q I’m on the waiting list. When will I find out whether or not I’ve got a ticket?
A Anyone on the waiting list who receives a ticket will be told before 16th May. After this time you must assume that you have been unsuccessful.

Q When will I get my ticket?
A Ticket collection is on Sunday 25th May. You will be given a specific time to arrive on that day nearer the time. If you know in advance that you can’t make that day, you will need to contact tickets@claremayball.com to make an alternative arrangement.

The ball is now fully subscribed, but you can still apply to be added to the waiting list.

At Clare May Ball 2008 we know that we can combine a fantastic night of high class entertainment with good environmental and ethical practice. This year we have made several changes to the way our ball is organised, which will improve the social and environmental impacts of the ball without affecting your experience!

  • We are now banking with the Co-operative Bank, who have an ethical investment policy: www.co-operativebank.co.uk.
  • A team from the Cambridge Balls Sustainability Project will be working throughout the night to recycle all of the waste from the ball. If you are interested in getting free entry to half of the ball and helping out with the recycling then please get in touch with ...
  • We are trying to increase our use of fair-trade, local and organic food & drinks at the ball, and investigating using compostable packaging at the event.
  • Our posters have been printed by Beacon Press, who are a member of the pureprint group and work to the very highest environmental standards.
  • We have done a lot to reduce the carbon emissions of Clare May Ball 2008. We have also teamed up with Climate Care to carbon offset 77.54 tonnes of CO2. It’s difficult to accurately quantify the emissions of the ball, but we’ve tried to get it as close as we can. Climate Care will fund projects in green energy, energy efficiency and forest restoration around the world to reduce emissions on our behalf, for more information about Climate Care and the projects that they fund please go to www.climatecare.org.
We would like to thank the Cambridge Balls Sustainability Project and RSK environmental consultancy group for making it easier to be green with their help and advice!
