Cambridgeshire Jubilee Debt Campaign Chained themselves up outside the Guildhall in Cambridge on Saturday 24th November 2001 to symbolise the chains of debt that are still holding millions of people in poverty around the world. The chain was made with over 1200 paper links, each signed by a member of the public to show their support for the campaign. After the event the chain was divided in two half will be presented to Ann Campbell MP and half to James Paice MP. Revelation Gospel Choir were also at the event to provide inspiring music on the theme of social injustice.
Jonathan Dorsett of Cambridgeshire Jubilee Debt Campaign said "The debt crisis has not gone away. Although $100 billion of debt cancellation was promised nearly 2 years ago by the worlds leaders, less than 3% of this has actually been written off. The $100bn promised only amounts to one third of that needed. Debt relief for the world's poorest people needs to be faster and deeper if the internationally agreed targets of halving world poverty by 2015 are to be met. This is why we are asking the people of Cambridgeshire to add their names to this chain and to show their support for this to our local politicians."
