DEBT EVENT IN CAMBRIDGE CITY CENTER ON SATURDAY 5TH OF MAY

This event will raise awareness and involve the press. We will be giving out Genoa cake free to anyone who thinks that the debt should be cancelled at the next G8 summit in Genoa. We'll give out fliers and encourage people to send postcards and letters campaigning against third world debt.

Please come if you can between 11:30 and 2:00, and encourage friends/members of your groups to come too - outside Guildhall in the main market square. The more people there to give out cake the better. If you can only come for a while, come at 12:00 for the press call.

Latest news on the Drop the Debt campaign

Extract from a recent report in the Guardian: "Gordon Brown last night gave strong backing to campaigners for more generous help for the world's most impoverished countries. The chancellor's move came after the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund warned that the assistance offered so far would be insufficient to save some nations from further years of grappling with unpayable debts."

There was also a recent article in the Wall St. Journal indicating how debt relief is already having a positive effect in Mozambique and that the money is getting through to the poorest people.

    Travel arrangements to Genoa

Whilst it is still possible to travel with Drop the debt to Genoa (£150 for transport and accomodation) we are looking into the idea of providing a minibus to Genoa from Cambridge.

Public information event at Eden chapel, on the 16th of May - 7:30 - 8:30

This public information event to be called "Third world debt - the campaign continues" will be open to everyone to come to find out more about third world debt. The speaker will hopefully be Martin Drewry - head of campaigns at Christian aid, if not then someone else from Christian aid. John Dorsett will also speak about local actions, as might Adam Conway regarding travel to Genoa.

Next event - Saturday 16th of June

The details of this event will be decided at the next meeting of the Cambridgeshire jubilee debt campaign on the 22nd of May.

Cambridgeshire jubilee debt campaign to register as a regional group. It was decided that, if we can afford it, we would register the campaign with the national coalition as a proper regional group at the cost of £50.
