Cambridgeshire Jubilee Debt Campaign
Committee meeting minutes: 27th January 2002
1. Don’t look away day
To be held on 9th February: 12-3pm, organised by People and Planet, a gathering of campaign groups on the streets of Cambridge.
Decided that CJDC wil be present:
- hand out ‘Still waiting for the Jubilee’ leaflets (JDC)
- hand out fliers containing information on writing letters to Mps encouraging them to join the debt action group. As Anne Campbell has not signed up to this it seems a good thing to campaign her on. The letter can be based on text from JDC but with added information about the CJDC chain petition.
- the chain will be used for publicity stunts with the hope of getting further coverage in he student/local papers
ACTION
- presence needed on the day to hand out fliers
- flier to be designed and printed
- template letter to be written
2. Unfair
Another event for campaign groups in Cambridge with emphasis on Trade and the Trade Justice Campaign. 11th February. (further details TBA).
Again decided that CJDC should be present.
The overall idea is to have different ‘fairground’ games to emphasis unfair trade rules. No further decision was made as little was known about the nature of the games and we need to find out from the organising committee which meets on Monday evenings.
ACTION
- find out details of games and participation of campaign groups - AJKW
>> Alex: CJDC are doing an unlucky dip whereby you draw a scenario from a hat describing your life (eg: Unlucky, you are born owing 30 times more than you will earn in your lifetime). I'm going to make this.
3. Use of the paper chain
The paper chain campaign was a big success with over 2000 signatures from Cambridgeshire. As most of the signatories are from Anne Campell’s constituency it seemed most appropriate to give the whole chain to her (rather than dividing it into 2 as originally planned). Alex and Angela took the chain to Anne Campbell at Westminster but she was unable to take it from them. She requested they organise a proper meeting in Cambridge though her press officer.
It was decided that we should wait until after we have petitioned her about joining the action group before handing it over. If she does join then it would make a brilliant press release when we hand it over!
4. Involvement in the STOPAIDS campaign
Alex attended the initial planning meeting but the orignal plans to set up a specific STOPAIDS campaign group is not going ahead. Instead there will be an email list for information and discussion which those interested can sign up to (information will be distributed when available).
5. Use of ‘Still waiting for the Jubilee’ posters and leaflets
CJDC has 500 fliers as well as A2 and A4 posters to be distributed to:
- Churches: Posters will be sent to churches (large churches will be contacted and asked if they can display A2 posters) along with some fliers.
- College chapels
Some leaflets will be available for ‘Don’t look away day’ and ‘Unfair’ (most of the info. on the leaflets will be included in the additional flier so that most leaflets are distributed to churches).
ACTION
- help needed to deliver/distribute posters to churches and college chapels, please contact Alex
- put request on campaigns list for people to take posters to college chapels -AJW
7. CJDC email lists
No objections were raised following Alex’s proposal in a previous email to create 2 separate email lists, 1 for committee members and 1 for campaigners.
> 2 email lists to be created - AJKW
6. Committee posts
Unfortunately Jon Dorsett will be stepping down from the committee at the end of January and so a new Press Officer is needed.
Additionally, as an early warning, Alex Wilkinson (Chair) and Rachel Skinner (Secretary) will also be stepping down at the end of June.
> consider candidates for Press Officer (urgent) as well as Chair and Secretary.
7. AOB
Thanks to all who sent advent cards to Anne Campbell and Clare Short. Responses from both were recieved but the replies were not particularly accurate and it was decided that responses from CJDC could be effective.
> individual responses to be made to letters from Clare Short and Anne Campbell
NEXT MEETING:
3rd thusday of the month - 21st of february at Great St Mary's (use the back door)
