For the coming of a new world order...
Cambridgeshire Jubilee Debt Campaign
Only 5% of third world debt has been cancelled and less than a third of what is needed has been promised. Money released by HIPC has brought many benefits, showing that debt cancallation does work, but much more is needed.
Before HIPC the poorest countries of the world were paying $64M every day to the West. After all the 'spin' on Enhanced HIPC this is still $61M every day.
The focus of attention has moved on to the 'war' against terrorism after the tragic deaths of some 6,000 Americans, in spite of the estimated 19,000 deaths attributable to diseases of poverty every day. Global economic slowdown following September 11th will hurt the poorest the hardest, so speedy debt cancellation is needed now more than ever.
"Without a convincing programme of debt relief, our objective of halving world poverty by 2015 will be only a pipe dream" - Kofi Annan.
The impending HIV/AIDS crisis in Africa makes debt cancellation even more important. Current actions have been described as "a sticky plaster covering one of the worst pandemics ever experienced."
The recent debt, aid and trade promises made to Pakistan show what can happen when there is political will.
I support the calls of debt campaigners internationally for cancellation of 100% of the unpayable debts of the poorest countries through a fair and transparent process, ensuring that it leads to poverty reduction.
